Cheapest/easiest Vader costume....ever!-Update 10-23 Page 4

Re: Cheapest/easiest Vader costume....ever!-Update 1-13

Update ola is what tiny thing I got done today that will finish one part of the project...so easy I'm ashamed it took this long. Mainly as the work took about 5 minutes.:$
boxesmv3.jpg

These are a pair of plastic composite blocks used by my company and others for decking as it doesn't splinter and dry out like wood. I cut them to 4 1/2" x 3". They are my belt box molds:) I will make grooves to show where to cut the windows once formed, and they will weigh nothing! Allllllllmostttttttttt there!

Re: Cheapest/easiest Vader costume....ever!-Update 11-04, page 3

Update, did some work at last on the mask mold, cut off the mount as it sucks and puts the helm too high, now it will sit at the proper level.

PS, you know how it goes: Cheap, fast......frankly pick ONE. It's taken longer than I thought, but hey, it's gonna rock when I'm forming CLEAR masks :)

Re: Cheapest/easiest Vader costume....ever!-Chest box update-5-14

Need rocker switches to add to the mold for these:

But am working with less time than normal, so no time to carve. After pondering it, I came up with a simple idea to make switches using online info that should work. I built this:

with styrene and Bondo, lots of super glue and more than a bit of patience. The angles are approximate, I'm no math whiz, but I'm happy with what I ended up with.

And thennnnnnnnnnnnnn

I will add them to the wood block, add the rods and light panels once I make them, then make a solid mold cast from that. My belt boxes are WIP, but shaping up nicely in ANH style.
Alllllllllmosssssst therreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Hey Man, it's the way I made mine back in 1999. It'll look great.

Re: Cheapest/easiest Vader costume....ever!-Update 5-14 Page 3

the CHEAPEST alternative and NO WORK involved is to SIMPLY contact the local 501st in you area and I am SURE any of their Vader's will do your film for FREE! If you need help let me know. you will have to do no work more then a phone call and they already HAVE the costume.

Your work is great by the way. I am curious how the recasting mentioned here hasnt been addressed or booed against. But you are doing a great job for what little time, supplies, and money you have.

Did contact locals, and filmed some a year or so back, but can't risk damaging Shalamar's armor as that's going to be an important function of the costume: destructibility.
As for the other thing...

I cast Rubies items: the old statue(maybe Rubies, maybe a Post) and a Rubies helm. No rpf artisans or makers, but commercial items that have served as the basis of so many replicas. I am stepping on no toes here.
Vadermonkey is helping tremendously as my Vader guide; donating parts and information. Everything on the chest box will be scratch built specifically to be vac-formed over, just like the rockers.
Thanks for the encouragement, I appreciate it.

Great job so far!

Nice work and well in the spirit of the board :thumbsup

I have a spare set of Russ Rep metal nobs and red washers for the belt boxes. If you want them shoot me a PM and they are yours.

And...
You are recasting for your own purposes, not for profit.
And since it is for the sole purpose of destroying it, it's not frowned upon.

Rules of recasting change AGAIN?

No matter.
Thanks for the kudos, guys.

Edit: really REALLY don't want to derail this, but it's still "ok" to duplicate commercial items, the rules apply to artisans working here and in the hobby elsewhere; their work is untouchable. In the extremely off chance that someone wants a bash-able/party safe suit of armor I may just accommodate them for little, if any, profit.

And months and months later.....most of one chest box :lol (the other light is drying still) And that's only fighting a schedule culminating in the first costume done for a Hal party this weekend. Vac-formed box 7x7, greeblies from vader monkey, I forget who made the wooden rockers but will find out.

Edit: BTW! Elmer's makes a decent superglue!

Re: Cheapest/easiest Vader costume....ever!-Update 3-6

Finally have the blast-able face masks forming :)
A bit more stretched out and bubbly than I thought, but this is thin stuff. Using .09 will work out smoother.
