Current Conan Sword Options

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the current choices for two Conan swords - the father's sword and the Atlantean sword? From what I can tell there are three categories...

Affordable:

Pricey:

Uber Expensive:

I'm leaning more towards "Affordable" or "Pricey". The affordable ones on Amazon look acceptable, but I have no idea how they compare to the others and if they would be better described as cheap crap. Does anyone have any thoughts?

There are also cheap ones by a seller on Etsy:

(toggle the drop-down for both swords)

They're cheaply made, but still impressive in my opinion!

I've been eyeing these for awhile, but I really wish I could find the Father's Sword in broken form!

Make sure you get the Windlass version, which is carbon steel and has a full tang (swords labeled as Pricey in your post). The detail of the hilts are pretty good. Apparently the Marto version has a bolt spot welded to a partial tang which can easily snap when subjected to too much torque. I can't speak to the knock offs which are usually manufactured in Pakistan, but the blade profile on the ones I've seen pictures of are nothing like the original prop.

The Uber Expensive ones are from Albion Armorers - hilts are cast from the original molds and the blades are identical to the original prop. Jody Samson, the guy responsible for making the originals for the movie from Ron Cobb's designs, worked with Albion Armorers to produce their replicas.

The Etsy ones are tempting just because that sale price is insane. (I'm assuming these aren't always "on sale" with a perpetual countdown clock to motivate impulse buyers. :) )

If you look at the reviews for the Etsy swords they mention that the sword is not actually carbon steel and doesn't look anywhere near as good as the pictures in the auction.

I've watched them for months, and they have always been on sale.

Yes, one review says that it's stainless steel, not carbon steel, and the same packaging as the $79 one on Amazon. Looks like they're right.

So you can get it even cheaper if you want a place holder till you can afford one of the good ones!

The father sword is even less:

Yes. Funny how there's all these gushing reviews and then the last one concerns me. Although it would be nice to own two swords for about $300, I'm leaning towards Windlass.

Actually, scratch the Etsy ones...they're the same as the Amazon ones I just linked to. And it's not $300 for two swords, it's $150!!!

I got the Windlass version a couple years a go and I love it. The bronze parts have a kind of subtle blue-green colorshift (almost as if from heat) that makes it look "high end" somehow. And the parts take on a slight patina after a while. The hilt castings are also nice and sharp. It doesn't look like a cheap toy to my eyes. The only downside, as with all the mid-lower budget copies is that the runes on the blade are laser-engraved and not very deep.

this sadly reminds me of the time I saw a Albion Atlantian on eBay for only like 3 or 400... they didn't know what it was... and I resisted the expenditure.

STUPID

If you do conventions, there's always a sword guy, sometimes they have pretty passable stuff cheap.... if passibly cheap will hold you over.
I got a Father's sword that looks the part for like $35. A wall hanger, I wouldn't dare swing it around, but displays nice, and the details are pretty accurate.

A few years ago an RPF member was making really nice replicas of the Atlantean and the Father's sword. I think his alias was SavageSword? I regret not picking up one of his Atlantean swords.

I know I have the Filmswords / Albion version on my to get list. I remember checking reviews or saw a video about it a while back which made it seem like the version to get. It is expensive but if you look at it like original artwork or an original movie poster. It's not that bad.

I didn't know about Atlanta Cutlery and going over their site, they do have some items that I might pick up in the future.

I have the windlass one.It is carbonsteel and mine is sharpened. It is really massive and feels like a real sword. The brass color and the grip are also top notch. The marto one is also nice because the runes are a little bit deeper in the metal. But its not a real working sword and they had massive quality problems in the past.

That is not a picture of the sword you are getting, look it up on eBay, every single Pakistani seller is using that same set of pictures. There are some tempting ones that say that are hand forged 1095 steel, but just like they can use any picture, they can say its made from whatever they like. Always ask for a picture of the sword you would be getting. If you want to know what your getting the Windlass is the best option, you can expect to pay about $400. Marto's are excellent as well, but every single Marto Atlantean sword listed on ebay right now as a is fake. The $128 price is a dead give away. BTW they are selling the actual one used in the movie, and the auction has some great photos. But, now I know the Marto is way better than the actual sword that was made for the movie. See here: Conan auction Sorry, this is the best picture I have but if you zoom in, you can see what the official Marto trade mark enraging looks like, right below the glif.

I have both the Marto and the Windlass. The Marto has a more accurate blade but as you know, it's not functional (although I don't trust the Windlass to hold up to heavy use). Both have nice hilts with the Marto having a dark bronze finish and the Windlass more of a dark brass finish. I want to say I remember reading that Windlass makes the hilts for both swords (they're identical as far as I can tell) though don't quote me on that. The only thing I don't like on the Marto is they oil the grip which looks wise gives it a cleaner look but if you touch it, it leaves a bad smell on your hands. The Windlass grip is a little frayed but nicer to hold. I can send you pictures if you like.

I'm actually looking to sell the Windlass. Neither sword has been displayed.

My Marto is sharp, course its only tempered Stainless steel, ( other than the Conan and 2 Witcher swords, all my others are functional high carbon and sharpened. I would like to get a hand forged High carbon Conan and Witcher swords some day, but its hard to tell what you are getting since most of them are made over seas and the photos and descriptions are just copied and pasted from somewhere else.

I ordered both Windlass versions from museumreplicas.com. (Seems to be the exact same store as atlantacutlery but - for whatever reason - the shipping was less from museumreplicas even though it ships from the same place.)

I was mainly interested in the father's sword, but fell in love with the Atlantean sword instead once I was able to hold it. Totally bad ass. I have one question about the father's sword though. This sword seems to have some odd scuff marks on both sides near the edge. (They don't rub off.) Is this normal? Or should I inquire about an exchange?

So i just joined to add to this discussion as I'm kinda familiar with all the options for the Conan swords.

The cheap Pakistani made ones are imo garbage, and they look terrible.

Neither the marto or windlass is functional and especially the father sword is not accurate and is missing details.

While it is true that the windlass has a carbon steel blade, the construction is unsafe for use, the handle is just a metal tube held together by a nut at the end of the tang.

There is only two functional versions out there, the cheapest is from Ryan sword, they are vey affordable, but are not accurate.

And then there's the version from Albion, those are the only screen accurate functional swords you can get, they are expensive and you would usually have to wait two years plus to get one.

I do sell those so that may make me biased, but I wanted the absolute best version of these swords, and that is exactly what I got.

None of these are functional in the true sense of the word when it comes to swords, they are way way too heavy, but they will hold up to use.

I added a picture of my two swords, one is from the first film the other from the second
