Dan Dare( 2000AD).

Finally put some paint down today. If it stays dry, I'll get the underside done tomorrow.

Ok, it's been a few weeks. I had to do a bit more sanding, so decided to add a bit of fine detail with some photoetch. Hope you like. It will look better once it's had a misting of primer.

This is great, I'm more familiar with Dan Dare as he was in the Eagle comic, we need to see more Dan Dare stuff.

Thanks for that. It's a compliment coming from you. How's the bird coming on?

Good, I know you have seen the update so will leave it at that.

Really seriously considering modelling the Eagle shuttlecraft now, looking at the design and thinking back to my 10 year old self wishing there was a model of it.

Ah, the heady days of 1977. I was exactly the same, but sci-fi models were thin on the ground back then.... After I finish this, I'm going to try for the VC's starship. I'm sure you remember that?

Actually I can't remember it, going to have to go to the back issues for that one. Must admit, wasn't my favourite story, never grabbed me as much as the others.

The starship was really cool.

Ahhhhhh, remember it now, a lot more work in that, and some tricky parts for FDM.

If you do it and need any detail parts printed, I can help you out, about to print a model for someone on the forum at the moment.

What CAD software are you using, Rhino?

My cad software is paper, pencil, ruler and eraser. I'll get around to learning 3d software at some stage. At present I haven't got a printer, so the model was done out in pencil and the drafts sent to a modeller in South Africa, who converted the lot to a 3d model. He used software called Zbrush. I downloaded the free trial, but without a physical book to refer to, it defeated me.
As for printing, I used a service I found on ebay. Not the best, it has to be said, with more fails than success-but here we are. When the parts first arrived, the rear half had to be printed again, due to the amount of cracking and warping. Put it this way, I first ordered the print back in November last year and only received something workable the day before I started this thread...

I've been considering a creality cr-10, but some of the resin printers are really coming down in price now, so I might bite the bullet soon and get one. Any thoughts on the Anycubic Photon printers?

Is the ebay service the one that peppers the listings now and again?

How big was the rear part and PLA or ABS?

I discovered the limits of printing big with ABS as I have had a couple of cracks in nearly full volume 30 x 30 x 25cm prints for the 1/12 Firefox parts. Easily fixable luckily as the prints were 40-50 hours!

The Anycubic Photon does seem like the best buy out of the current batch of SLA printers, and they have done the new revised version recently. The Creality Ender 3 is a really good buy for FDM as it has a 24V power supply which means the bed heats up considerably faster.

This is the one.

Just look this up in the sellers section. The lower half was 160mm high by 340mm wide. I doubt I'll be using the service again, as he reckoned he had lost over £150 worth of filament, due to fails and if I wanted anything else large printed, he would have to charge me around £900, and then refund me the difference..... As filament costs around £20 a kilo roll and the model weighs in around 1.5 kilos, I very much doubt the £900!
The filament used was white PLA. When the parts arrived, the lines were very coarse, indicating a very low resolution had been set. I've seen other fdm prints that have come out nearly perfect, in other forums.
As for the Anycubic, if things go according to plan, I'm hoping to pull the trigger at the end of the month. It's well passed time I spoiled myself....

The items he has listed look good, so sounds like he cranked the speed up due to the size, so the layer adhesion was bad. You really shouldn't have that kind of issues with PLA.

I realised some time ago, if in doubt print a bit slower, getting it printed right the first time will invariably save you time overall.

With SLA getting good results is more down to getting used to how to to orientate for printing and getting supports right.

If you go for the Anycubic let me know, I bought some resin at a really good price when I was going to get a Photon myself a couple of months ago, just before I worked out I could convert my other Photocentric printer to use the same high res screen as the Photon.

Weather was decent yesterday, so I got some painting done. Started something else while it was drying...

Some minor alterations needed, but WOW! That's pretty good. Here's are some pictures for reference.
