Daredevil Red Suit Build (Netflix)

I feel bad for having slower progress than I had hoped. Last weekend I started on a bodysuit, read the article about 4 people/45 minutes. Knew I had to keep it simple to it being put on either by myself and maybe one other helping. I threw my stretchy material to the side.....for now. My would be pattern was put back in the sewing table. Went out searching for more patterns and to make sure I had the materials I wanted....one last time.

Found a good polyester, but it was $29.99/yd. No thanks...had to remind myself budget for the suit because I know I will have mistakes. If anybody else has a good budget, than there are some other canvas style materials out there that may look better. So far, materials that are available to me off the shelf, duck cloth has the best color but some of the other canvas (and I think a cotton) has a better/wider weave. So it would be a toss up for anybody not worried about budget as much as I am. Weave may give a better apperance from a distance, but require more work in the color department. Once my suit is done, I may see if there is a mesh I can put over it and mist a color over it to give it a more screen accurate appearance. But one step at a time.

As noted above, Kwik Sew 2335 pattern is no longer available in physical form, so I had to settle for Simplicity 4760 which is a combination pattern pack of dress shirts and khaki style pants sizes S-XL. The best part is, the pants you can put together without pockets or belt loops very easily!! The downside is the instructions must have been translated from another language because no less than half made no sense and the images did not help at all for the bad instructions. The last 6 steps I just did what I thought was right because it was so badly explained. I could have been done with the foundation of the pants this morning if not for the instructions! So if anybody copies me with this pattern, please have an expert at reading patterns you can call on. I managed to get through it all but the end, was trial and error or search the internet for keywords. Some other notes about the pattern. The sizes do run big so you may need to go down a size. I did. Even after going down a size, the legs will be a loose fitting. I found out tonight so that leaves some minor work to do.

Because I am going with 2 pieces instead of the bodysuit, I decided to keep the belt loops. I copied the back belt loops to the front of the pants. Was very simple to do. They are actually pretty small so may have to make a custom belt to use for the suit.

So for the weekend, I at least have my foundation for the pants. I have tomorrow off but have no help, will try to take in the legs so they are not as loose. I will start to cut out the red portions to add to the pants. I don't think adding the red parts will be too time consuming since they are symmetric and nothing crazy about the design, just layers. My plan is to add them this week if possible since I have a busy weekend ahead.

Again sorry it is not much of an update. The pattern really kicked my butt. I have used patterns before, but never like this one. Hopefully I will have a few more pics tomorrow or early in the week.

Yeah dude. You should feel bad. Finish it ASAP for us. Jeez, what's so hard about that?

Jk. Builds are hard and this is entirely new, so don't feel bad. Question though, do you think you'll get some padding and sew it under the fabric. On the costume, specifically the chest, you can see that there is some type of armour under the red part of the chest.

Yes, I will be padding the vest like in the show. I am leaning towards EVA foam with velcro openings on the underside so I can pull the foam out prior to any washing. Thought that would be the fastest and most economical way to do it. Plus I can use my motorcycle coat as a visual model since it has that concept already in place.

Not big updates this week. Took a lot of excess bagginess from the pants, got them hemmed and just basically ready to wear. Been comparing drawings (mine and Looch) with the show to try and get the correct placement of the red. Looks like the black stripe for lack of better words is also the same level as the layers of red, so that was nice to figure out.

I am already on the slow side just because my life is so jam packed with non-cosplay items, but this week I was really slowed down a lot and not sure how it will impact the timing of my completion. My wife's family just recently had to place somebody in hospice care, so of course, I can't estimate the impact on getting this done in next 2 months. Going to try and keep it slow and steady still, but wanted to explain my absence if I don't at least post something before end of the weekend each week.
