Doc Savage

Thanks again for the kind words.

Sorry that my information about where I got the items to make up the costume wasn't very helpful to most of the folks out there. I'm a scrounger when it comes to costumes and prop building. I usually make an item I can't find. I may use the internet as a last resort if it's something too complicated to make. I guess old habits die hard.

Just a bit of more info about the shirt. It was one of those duty uniform shirts that security and law enforcement officers use. It had epaulets, pleated pockets and permanent creases.

Great to see a Doc Savage on here finally.
It's one of the first things I did a search for when I joined RPF, but sadly, no costumes until I saw this.

It's one I hope to see more often. I'm thinking of doing one myself. I got the pants, boots and a belt a few years ago, now all I need is a shirt. I'll probably get one of the inexpensive Indiana Jones shirts and tear it up.

I'd go mostly for the Bama look since it's the most familiar, but for the hair I'm thinking maybe I'd do bronze instead of blonde, in keeping with the pulp diescription, and in keeping with Bama's first design for the book cover
(seen in pic attached, I have a framed print of it)

I'll definitely get a spray tan first. Maybe even wear some gold contacts.
The only question is whether or not I'll consider myself in decent shape enough to wear a shredded shirt in public.

Maybe if I make it to dragon con this year I'll give it a go.

I'd say go for it at whatever con you may be at. I wasn't in my top shape when I had done this. I was fortunate(?) enough to have had some lousy things happen in my life at the time and the stress made me drop a lot of excess weight I didn't really need.:lol You could say I made lemonade out of the lemons. Just have fun with it.

I thought about trying that costume myself, years ago, when I was in shape and had a tan....now, I'm afraid I'd look like "The Man of Chalk" instead of the "Man of Bronze"! :lol

You used to be able to find those belt buckles all the time, along with the Buckaroo Banzai buckles but not so much anymore.

Oh yeah, the avenger. He had that cool side button jacket.

As for the belt buckle, I'm torn on whether or not to use the Doc Savage logo belt buckle. It's kinda cool, and it would help explain to people who I am, but it's also not accurate to the novels or the cover images except for the Ron Ely version, which I'm not all that interested in.

I'll probably just go with a regular vintage buckle and not care if some people don't recognize me.
It would be cool to do a version of doc's supermachine pistol (guns are always fun to pose with) but then again Doc hardly ever used it, usually it was just his fabulous 5 that carried them.

It would be great to see a guy in a Doc costume and a guy in a shadow costume posing together.

nice idea the pic of Doc and The Shadow unfortunately for me I life in France too much distance separates us Doc and me:rolleyes

As I recall, I found the jodhpurs at a military show held annually at our State Fair grounds in the Spring and Fall. The boots I had bought years earlier at a local tack shop for my Rocketeer costume (Which I'll have to find pics to post at some time).

Yes, you'll definately have to post pics of your Rocketeer. I remember it from Valleycon from years back.

Glad to see you finally made it on the RPF.

Found it! From what I can see, it looks pretty cool.

I saw this movie on cable. Ron Ely was great as Doc.I kind of wish they made another.Did this ever come out on DVD..Sorry if this is not on topic but hey. Thanks

Does anyone have one of the belt buckles?

Does anyone have a good pic of it?

I did a quick Google and found this-

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/doc-savage-belt-buckle-9

It's information of past auctions on evil Bay, but has a nice photo of the buckle.

I had considered making one for my costume. I chose not to because I considered Doc to be world famous, and wouldn't really need to promote himself that way. Some would proably say it would help to identify the character to those who wouldn't know who I was trying to portray. But I figured the torn shirt would be a dead give away. If people still couldn't identify the character, then they never knew who Doc was in the first place.

Amen to that...the torn shirt and the jodhpurs ought to be enough....:cool

I think I'm going to have a go at this one. While I'm still in reasonably good shape (though I'll still make a fairly wimpy Doc).
I'm going to use:
An Indy shirt (I know, I know, destroying an Indy shirt seems like overkill but I really like the color of it and the vintage look).
Some brown jodhpurs that I'm having custom made (I have a good brown vintage pair but they're heavy wool and hot to wear here in CA - guess I'll sell them to someone lucky).
Brown riding boots that I already own.
For a belt, I've decided to try and get one like Bama used in most of his paintings. Just a plain brown vintage belt.
Not sure whether or not to do a wig or just put some kind of temporary dye in my hair. I may go with the book correct version of a bronzish-hue to my hair, rather than the Bama blonde.
I'll get a dark spray tan, and then finally, I'm going to put in some gold contacts so my eyes will be correct. I don't think anyone's ever gone that far before.
I may even try to put together some kind of supermachine pistol. Doc didn't usually carry a gun, but he carried his own custom one in the early stories, and it would be good to pose with, helping to cap off the whole pulp hero look.

Anyone want to recommend a place I could find gold contacts? Or a very close-fitting skull cap-type wig to make me look like the Bama doc?

EDIT - I just realized that I might be inadvertently hijacking this guy's thread. Didn't mean to do that. I'll post a separate thread asking about gold contacts some other time. Please resume discussing other things.

I just may be the only person that liked the Ron Ely Doc film. No, it wasn't perfect an d yes, it could have been Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better, but for now, it's all we got.

I have one of the buckles with the Doc logo on it, wore it once but didn't want to damage it.

Steve,

Can you post a pic of your buckle?

There are many places that provise custom contact lenses. If you actually use corrective lenses, you can consult with your provider about this, too.

I've played with the idea of a submachine pistol using a smaller scaled, straight clip toy Thompson as a base. The shoulder stock would be removed and the barrel shortened to a more suitable pistol type barrel.

Go for it, Max....and yep, you gotta have that widow's peak hair, or most folks won't know who you are!

....not that they would know Doc, anyway....most folks see Ron Ely and think Tarzan...:lol
