Dr Who series 5 ep 10 for Amy

Sorry for the double post, but I didn't want anyone to miss this info.

Based on my research, and my source on the crew, it seems that John Whalley is the artist of "The Pandorica Opens." Does anyone have any contact information for him? That's where my leads stop.

Little help, anyone with connections?

-Nick

just found this.

That's pretty cool.

I'm not a huge fan of that fan made Pandorica painting. It's impressive and all, but I don't like how the TARDIS looks.

Dang, I thought for sure it was concept art as I found it on a webpage in a folder of leaked images, which did go up on the BBC site after the episode aired. I also don't like the look of the TARDIS on the fan painting either but the rest of it is very cool.

So all we have to go on is screengrabs (which I'm doing right now BTW)? That means we don't know the bottom left or right at all. I wish they had shown it all as it's such a cool painting.

The bottom right corner can be seen through the canvas when river shines her light through it in the Royal Gallery, and a few small details can be made out on the other side as well in this scene. Unless someone can get in touch with, or help me get in touch with John Whalley, I guess that'll have to do.

-Nick

PS: based on the Royal Gallery scene, it appears that the original painting actually has the TARDIS intact...or maybe that's my eyes playing tricks on me.

www.johnwhalley.com ??? It's an artist website and there's a contact us link. Might be the same guy.

This is the same studio on FB too: John Whalley Studio | Facebook

That's all I could find on him.

I think it's a different guy. John Whalley is a set painter for the show, so chances are he doesn't live in the US like that John Whalley.

Hell of a coincidence though.

Damn, I did wonder too. Oh well, it was worth a shot. I'm uploading those images to imageshack right now. If nobody posts after this I'll just edit this post so check back either way in a couple of minutes.

EDITED: To add links:

Image #1 is where he opens it upside down so the top left corner would be the bottom right corner in this image:

The second image is of it being flipped around.

The rest of the images are regular shots. Some close ups on the door writing and the explosion. Tried to get 2 or 3 grabs of the wide shot as it panned in and showed a little extra. You can kinda make out the bottom right as River shines the flashlight on it. Still can't really make out the bottom left though :(

Hopefully these help a bit.

Those are perfect, WM! I'll get some appropriately-sized paper tomorrow to start working on a 1:1 sketch to work from.

These will be a great help.

And as for my Van Gogh inspired Amy portrait, I think I'm going to use this image as my basis:

Then I'll pull a color palette from one of his other portraits and have some fun.

But I want to do "The Pandorica Opens" first.

Sounds good, I do love that picture of Amy in the notebook. Does make me wonder when they'll be using it though.

Glad to be of service :D

Keep us updated for sure.

On close inspection there are clearly at least 2 paintings used. The close up of the co-ordinates (on the phone sign of the TARDIS) is a different painting than the wider shots.

I did ponder that but just dismissed it. Glad someone else took a proper look. Definitely good to know though.

Sadly, make that at least 3 paintings... The one that we can see through when River shines the light on it is a different painting entirely. You can see a full, unexploded TARDIS at the top centre. :(

So much for gleaning info from those shots. Obviously something was just scrawled on a canvas that was considered "good enough" for the brief glimpse you'd see from the back.

Damn, that really sucks. Makes sense though with the way she carelessly ripped it off the frame.

I was really hoping that the BBC would put up this picture after the episode like they did with the "To Victory" Daleks poster from episode 3 :(

Hopefully if nothing else, it'll show up inside the DVD box set as artwork or as an "extras" photo on the DVDs or something.

The reason I'm finding all of these now is because I'm trying to photoshop the painting. I've got just about everything except the bottom two corners... And then it gets worse.

The wide shots (with River as Cleopatra) are a different painting as well. This is ridiculous!

Yeah, I tried that last night...as best as I can tell there is one large large explosion swirl in the bottom left, that may connect with the main explosion somewhere near the bottom center of the picture. The bottom right, in each version consistently has what appears to be some sort of detached explosion or swirl...ppossibly an object, but I just can't make it out.

Someone must have a connection with the scenic department so we can at least HEAR what is in those corners if not see them...

EDIT: Also, it seems my guess of 38cm X 55cm works...at least in terms of scaling. It didn't seem to cause any undue stretching when I fit the image (Minus the canvas border) to those dimension.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I haven't forgotten about this project, and just as soon as I finish some work on my current primary project (Dr. Horrible Goggles), this painting will take precedence. I've been making some rough sketches in the meantime, trying to get a sense of the general flow of the painting.

I hope to start putting brush to canvas in the first two weeks of September.

If anyone has anymore information though, or has found any additional reference materials, I'd really appreciate it if I could have a gander before I begin.

Just thought I'd make known the technique I was using while trying to fill in the missing pieces. I found a high res version of Starry Sight to harvest compatible swirls and brush strokes from. Figured if I was going to make stuff up, it ought to at least have some kind of authenticity. Still can't figure out what to do about the lower left corner though. I just put a big swirl in the lower right. Oh and by the way, the painting that's ripped from the frame and the one on Cleopatra's table are the same. I stretched them both into the proper shape, tweaked the levels and compared them, they match.
