Could it be that they trimmed down the original flashdish that came with the flash and then simply glued it on?

It has always reminded me of the cover of an automotive battery terminal brush. I have no idea if that's anything like what they used in the movie. Here's a picture of one; I've seen others that look more like what that Jawa is holding:

Maybe an after market light filter?? I say keep looking at camera parts. Seems like they used a tone of old camera bits in those films.
