ecl's Kermit the Frog Puppet Replica (later builds, using my newest patterns)

I used stik glue for my prototype mouth-plate adhesion. (Ha)

ECL, your builds are the best out there, bar none. I'm finally starting to attempt my first Kermit, but I have a question about the mouth gluing: when you ladder stitch the two sides of the head together, do you leave a little space at the tip of the mouth unstitched, or do you sew it all the way to the tip of the lips? Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks! Much appreciated :) And that is a great question! I leave about 1/4” or just a touch more unstitched; it’s easier to glue that way, and to get it to fit just right. You can still trim that area afterwards if necessary. It’ll overlap a bit, naturally, so trim it like below:

Just finished my second Kermit build on the left. Thanks again ecl for your help and guidance. After my first one i had learned so much and wanted to give it another go. It took me a bit longer to get this one done as I wanted to take my time and try to get this one right. I am pretty happy with it as of now. I am sure I will start to see all the little things that will make me want to start another soon.

He’s wonderful! It’s always an interesting experience building more than one; each time is a unique experience and he’ll just keep evolving! The shape of the body looks really clean; that’s one of the biggest challenges when building a Kermit.

ECL. Just wanted to express my thanks for all the work and passion you’ve shared here. Your advice and support have been so helpful as I’ve been researching this build. Your support documents / drawings explaining your approach have been fantastic!
.
I did have one question about Kermit’s collar. For some reason I’ve been struggling in how and where exactly to attach it. Seems so silly, but I feel really good about all the other steps that are so much more complicated. Would you elaborate on where you attach his collar and what kind of stitch do you use? Any reply would be so appreciated.

Thanks! It’s been interesting; when I started my first build, I had not intended for it to continue to evolve, although it’s not al that surprising as Kermit has a lot of fans apparently!

As for the collar, I generally sew it around the base of the neck. Just under 1/4” away from where the top of the body is. Of course, this can vary depending on the builds, but I find this tends to work fine. What I do is basically stuff up the neck first (So that it’s easier to place the collar around, pin it with the collar facing up like in the pic below (although pinning it into stuffing isn’t perfect, as it’s not all that solid, but it works well enough), and then I sew it using the same stitch as the rest of the body, which is generally called a ladder stitch. Although other stitches could work as well, but this is what I’ve been doing. After it’s done I just flip it down, and then connect the back with a few stitches (I think it’s called a whip stitch for this; I’m not too clear with the terminology).

One important thing to keep it mind is to be gentle while sewing it, because the collar can slowly shift if there’s too much pulling and movement during the stitching process. Just gently stitch it, letting the needle do most of the work. No need to overtighten it, etc.

Wow just spent a few hours reading your threads. Inspired to get started. Thank you again for sharing your time, techniques and experiences building Kermit!

Question, is the top of body parallel to the bottom or does it tilt forward a little? Its hard to tell in the photos. Or is the the collar sewn at an angle?

Thank you I'm going to start forming up the body today. I can see what your talking about in some reference photos. He has a flatter chest down to a belly and a nice curved football line to the back. This illustration shows it pretty well too. Another question, when you measured around 7.5 inches for the body height. Was it from the front or the back?

I had measured that from the front; although, the body sizes seems to vary a little, so if you’re working around that range, it should work fine!
