efx doing the old MR red 5 X-Wing in 2008 ---Maybe

Heya Lee - which aft cockpit stripe is grey on Red 5? Where on Red 5 am I supposed to be looking?

Here?

JEEZ!!

To think I've been squinting over those crappy Revell photos all this time when photos as detailed as this exist of Red 5!

I never even realised they actually fitted perspex into the cockpits until now.
:eek

I think I read in the making of starwars book that they used or planned to use microscope specimen glass as it reflected light more accurately for the scale. So although I knew Joe designed the shape of the cockpit to be suitable for glass/perspex I've never seen any evidence until now of it being fitted.

Anyway, the eFX X-Wing is from the MR proto and is NOT an Icons and is NOT a Salzo.

Brian Ono has revealed some new information on this. It seems it is NOT simply the MR Proto. On the rebelscum forums, he said:

We have not established a price the X-Wing yet! However, I can tell you that we have practically started from scratch, since there were so many things that were not right about the MR model. As you know we are doing Red 5 and all that is left in the archives in Red 3. So we are still gathering reference materials. . .

Red 3 is beat up, too. Glad Bryan and Barry are doing the legwork. I have the EFx X on my "must buy" list.

Sounds good, but, weren't we told over and over the MR was going to be the ultimate...why is it now not-good? Will the EFx one also be the ultimate, up until it isn't? I'm not actually sceptical as such, just felt the question needed to be asked.

Also, still curious regarding the claims made for the reference material supplied for the MR build, specifically the remains of Red 5 - can anybody please come out and say definitively how badly the original ILM model was junked?

Cheers,
Martyn

Well to be fair the MR was never compelted. It was in rough first cut phase would be the way I'd best describe it... Ok maybe a bit past that. BUT apparently the started with the MR prototype and decided to redo it... that's going to make for a longer cycle time, but should be an awesome product.

The only thing the archives physically have any more on Red 5 are wings... and they were modified/redressed as Red 4 at some point!

Yeah, I pretty much figured she'd have been on one or other of the tours if she was available. If they're the wings seen in the ILM book pic with Lucas in the middle of all the models, and not the pyro Red 4 wings...then that's pretty definitive. Bummer.

I guess nobody's spilled what happened, yet? Are the wings themselves damaged?

Also a pilot and Bryan just said this

Bryan Ono should step in here as this is something he should know all about.

Gee thanks Philip!

We were very careful with the electronics on the Falcon, since because of the construction, you would not be able to change the LED's once assembled. Each set of electronics were carefully tested (before and after) and all of the solder joints were supposed to be checked carefully to make sure they were "shiny and smooth" to ensure a good secure connection. Also, there are the proper resistors inline to control the current. So, unfortunately, I do not have an answer to why some of the lights are going out. As stated above, the LED's should not burn out, since the minimum life was spec'ed at 10,000 hours.

As for the specific problem, here are a couple things to try. Even with the ON/OFF switch, if you kept the adapter plugged in, there could be a little trickle of current going into the Falcon from the base. However, this is not enough to light the LED's. In this case, corrosion can builb up on the connection. So try:

1. Spinning the Falcon on the base. Sometimes, this will "scrape' off the corrosion.
2. Remove the Falcon completely from the base and clean off the connection post and receptacle.
3. Ensure that the spring that was included is on the male connector. This helps to secure the connection.
4. Test and replace the Adapter if necessary. The spec is 12VDC, Center Hot, Switching adapter.

Hope this helps. And just for your information, the X-Wing we are working on, we are trying to make all of the LED's replaceable. We are trying our best to engineer it so that parts are removable to have access the LED's, yet invisible when assembled.

That would be great! My MR Falcon mandible light went out soon after I got it. MR did jack squat to help, short of asking me to send it back.

Sure, I move refrigerator-sized boxes around all the time! Lol.

Sounds like efx has the right ideas going for the X-wing, this should be an exciting project to follow.:thumbsup

Hey, Jason. From the photos I was supplied which weren't many. I even had to grab my own screen shots. But your arrows are in the position where I was pointing out. In your shots it looks Red in the ones I had to use it looks gray but I'll find the pic I have and pop it up. By the way I was not provided any photos of fuselage at all.

Dang dude, that sucks. I'm happy to trade my ref with you. I have all angles now, finally. There's a few Red 4 pics I still have a hunch are floating around, that I need...
