(Electronics) Sound Module? Soundboard? Question

I am tying to figure out what I would need to accomplish what I want. If I knew the names of the items I needed I could research better. So if anyone could point me in a good direction or give me suggestions/tips I would greatly appreciate it.

I build large full scale movie scene displays. I've built a Raiders of the Lost Ark pedestal display and am almost done the map room (full scale). Next I want to build the bridge of the original series enterprise. So the answer to this question will help me on many different builds I want to do as I usually want to add sounds to things, but don't know how.

What do I need to hook up a bunch of switches/buttons to a bunch of different sounds? For example, when I make the replica bridge console it will have some switches and buttons. I want to hook these up to "something(s)" so each button will play a certain sound/file I have set up. I understand basics of wiring and know that I will need to amplify it to some speakers, but that's about all I know.

Again, even just basic names of what I would need would be great. I tried searching "soundboard" as that is what I am essentially trying to create, but I didn't find what was looking for.
 
Might want to talk to Bob (RPF member replicaprops) about what you're going for.... He sells soundboards, can set you up with all kinds of configurations. He sells boards and explains more at www.replicaprops.com.
 
My first thoughts on this is will there be different sounds (WAVs, MP3, etc.) played when each switch is closed or will the same sound be played from
multiple switches? If there are multiple sounds will they need to be recorded for a very short time and then loop to make the sound
longer? I would imagine that all the sounds would go though one amplifier? You would need a decent sound file for each sound and
then load them into some type of player which could then be addressed individually or each sound would have it's own player and
the switch for that sound ''player'' would play though the amp ( http://www.adafruit.com/product/175 ) , ( http://www.adafruit.com/products/94 ).
I would also think that you would need the sound to play without any delay after the switch is released or right when it is closed.

No problem jclinton,

I think the ISD recordable module is the best bet and they don't look too expensive,
simple, quick action and reliable.

It also has a "push to play" button that can be paralleled by a second external switch to activate the sound remotely
from your panels.
It seems to also have a loop function as well. The sound can be recorded via a microphone or directly wired from a WAV sound,

I would be interested in finding out how you'll accomplish this...and maybe see a video of how your finished
sound circuit works for you.

Thanks, I am not at that stage yet. i am getting all my plans together over the next month or so. I am currently building the full scale map room and need that completed by Oct 31st. The 2nd week in Nov I am planning on starting the Bridge. Now I am looking up parts, switches, electronics and I already have the schematics for the wood word I need to do. So it will be a little bit before I am working on the physical aspect.

I think that nanocomputer like raspberry pi or arduino system could be very useful. I begin to study these tools.

you can use arduino with a sound mp3 module like the WT5001M02-28P, plus a mini amp 3watt and speakers of course.

for example arduino nano supports 22 pins where connect any kind of switch and play the sound or light effect needed

i did use those components to add sound/light effects on my e11 arduino blaster
