Firefly knifes

Wow, that is really looking good. You know a few years ago, folks were really looking for one of these, Maybe you should offer a small run if yours turns out as good as it looks like it's going to. Heck, even resin castings might do well. Just a thought. ;)

I always thought that the Jaynestown knife was carried in Binky's sheath,
but apparently not...

This looks like a fairly simple piece of leather working.

"Boy, sure would be nice if we had some grenades,
(and some knives, and a big gun, and a funny hat made by Ma Cobb,)
don'tcha think?"

JayneStuff01.jpg

This is a couple of projects off my "to-do" list, (includes the grenades)
tho' neither is perfect.

I have no idea why I felt compelled to take on the Jaynestown knife
when the whole idea of the work I'm doing is to finish unfinished projects.
Well, actually, I do know.
After I built the Jayne War Stories switchblade,
I realized I only needed one more knife to be able to display all of Jayne's knives.
Plus, it'll look good with the QMx Hero of Canton poster.

I've shown the other building steps;
stainless steel blade, brass hilt, staghorn cut out of wood;
the one that didn't turn out so well was masking and painting the grid pattern.

JayneStuff02.jpg

NOW I'm willing to say I'm not going to take on more work to strip and fix it.
As I've noted before, without a close up pic for comparison,
I think it will display nice enough.
If I wait to get it perfect, I may never display it.

AWESOME! I love that jaynestown knife. It looks great.

Yes I can see what you mean about the grid work, but I can live with it. (Or I could if it were mine. :lol)

You did a fantastic job on everything else thought. the handle looks out standing, and the blade is amazing. I show wish I had the time to take on making one of these, or the money to pay someone to make one for me.

Thanks!
I found out after I started that the blade is dimensionally incorrect,
and that grid pattern, meh...
but the handle actually looks better in person.
The flash washes out the texturing that I dry-brushed on to make it look more like staghorn.
One more piece in my "not-right" collection,
but I'm still happy with it.

Now, if I ever get any SPARE time, I'll strip that blade and...

Re: Jayne's firefly switch blade knife.

No idea what the origin of the Wash pistol casting is.

Yea, it looks to be a cast of the Poseidon Mateba kit.(atleast I hope its a cast and not the real deal) It's substiantially different from an actual Mateba.

Has anyone figured out the actual size of the jaynestown knife? (I've contacted a few folks that say they have screen used versions , but non of them have got bock to me.

I saw the rubber stunt version at Farpoint Con 2011.
About 15" to 16" overall length; blade 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" at the widest point.

My replica is undersized at 14" OAL.

pennausamike , I can't tell from your pictures, does the blade edge go down an equal amount on both sides of your switchblades blade? And how well do the grips fit yours?

I finally got around to ordering one from that site your mentioned quite a wile back. It came, and it's nice, and fun to play with. But I did notice that Jayne's switchblade is what they call a Bayo (Bayonet) style were the blade edge only comes about 1/3 of the way down one side, and most of the way down the other side. The one I received has an equal amount of blade edge on both sides. (sorry if that's not very clear) Also, It not a huge deal, but the Pearlex grips, look kind of like an after thought on mine. They stick up a bit over the pommel, and Guard pieces. (for lack of a better description.) And they are more blocky then the shape of those other pieces. (If that is not clear enough I could try to take some pitures.)

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't expecting a perfect match to Jayne's. I mean, every other switch blade I could find ranged from $82. -$130. So for the price this is a nice knife, and will hold the spot for now. I was just curious if the one you received was any different from mine.

My Jayne apple-spear is the bayonet style like in Wargames.

I posted links to two different knives.
The 10 inch version wasn't right, (I don't think),
but the 13 inch version I bought seems right to me
13" White Pearlex Dagger Classic Italian Stiletto Switchblade Brass Liners
I checked the link and it is still 45 bucks.
I then paid the $15 to have it made into a kit to eliminate any legal issues.
Are You Kitting Me?
I checked the link, and that is $15.99, now.

Overall, I'm happy with the quality and how close it looks to the prop seen in Firefly.

Yep, that's the link I used (the one for the 13" one), and the knife I bout, but I did not get a "bayonet style" blade on mine. :( And yes, your right, they did have a bayonet style blade on the screen used one. :(

The one I recieved has a different blade, and the grips are ill fiting. :( I guess they must of changed there stock, and didn't bother to change the listings. :(

Edit: Actualy if you click on that link now, and take a closer look at the pictures they have up now, they did update it. The picture is of the non-bayonet style that I recieved. I know the pictures they used to have up, were different. I should have looked closer before I ordered, because wall I do think they did have the right knife, the one they offer now, is not. I know the one I got it certanly not right. :( And I can't find another site with a bayonet style blade, in stock, at a good price, and after spending $55 (that's after shipping) for this one, I'm not really looking forward to ordering another one. :( Oh, well, my bad, I should have looked closer before I leaped.
