Any more pictures of the Idol with this paint application? The first pic still looks like painted gold... doesn't seem to have the metallic edge to it that real shiny gold has.

When I worked at the Scenic shop we would first paint the item a dark green, then a silver color and gold after that..a clear coat before the gold might add some depth.

no more pics. It definately isn't mirror finish like gold but it does show reflection. I had the unfinished idol for years and figured this would hold me over until I can get it plated.

I wsill try the layered colors sometime and see if that helps.

Hey guys, if you have any more pictures of things you have painted with stuff please toss them up here. Would love to ge ta few more examples. Have a project I need to do that will require a lot ofthis, if it works out.

So any more pics would be great.

Question ? Could this paint be clear coated with a gloss to help protect it or would that mess up the finnish some how??

clear coat is always an option but just make sure you use the same type of paints and the weather is not to cold or humid.

That's what I've been using for a gold effect...
Paint gold first then leaf over that.

My son and I did a bunch of the Disney store pirate coins this way.
We didn't paint them first though, they were already gold :lol

another option is to "gold leaf" the idol there is fake gold leaf

Just wondering if chroming/metalizing is the only option to get that mirror finish.

Toys, such as the Kenner C-3PO had the gold mirror finish, other toys as well... and model kit cars has chrome parts - the Tsukuda 1:9 Endoskeleton was chrome plastic. All plastic... how are these made and is that technique available for personal use or is it something that is cast that way?

another option is to plate it like how they do "bronze baby shoes"
Its done with silver or copper metal powder in a clear coat that is sprayed or paint on then that is copper plated and nickel plated and what ever other metal you want plated at the end.-THis is not to cheap

The key to any shiny metal finish is going to be surface detail. Any bumps and pits are just going to show more once you start making it metalized.
So a smooth surface to start with will give you the best results.

If you want to know more about the plate process and where to get it try:

hope that helps
