Fringe shape changing box

Minute Man Electronics has them for sale again but I think they only take credit cards. The covers sell for US$2.99 though they have a minimum US20.00 order policy. I'd buy some but can only imagine their shipping rates to Australia.

Minute Man Electronics Hardware for Switches

Ok, Minute man, is going to take a check. (I have no idea why they haven't moved on to taking paypal, But whatever.) I had to order 7 of them, to meet their minimum order. :( It will probably be a couple of weeks before I get them. (since the check has to get to them ,and then the items has to get to me. ;( ) Anyway's, If anyone needs one of these, or you know 4 or 5 of them, let me know. I would have to charge like $5.00 shipped for them, but at least you wouldn't have to meet a minimum order, and I am willing to ship out side the use. (for a little extra shipping. ) When they get here, I may put up a proper for sale thread, but I just wanted to put the word out there, to get that ball rolling.

Anyways, it looks like I will finally be able to do a replica of this prop.

Hey Gang,

I was itching to build something, and since I just happened to have most of the parts for this laying around the house....

I still need to wire up an LED, but other than that it's done. It isn't perfect, but I'm happy with it.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread! :)

WOW! that looks great.

What did you use (or how did you make) those mouth pieces? Where did you get (or make) such great leads? Is that lighter colored area, under the switch cover, around the switch, painted that color, or is it a washer, or something like that? Oh, and how did you get your switch cover to stay open?

That looks FANTASTIC!

So, what did you do for the leads - they look really good.

And your mouthpiece parts look spot on - how did you make them? Are you willing to make more?.... ;)

Thanks Guys! :$

Okay here are the answers to your questions-

The leads are just normal LAN cables, but I colored the middle of one side with a black Sharpie. I used the copper wires as a guide. I don't know how well this will stand up over time, but I'm not planning to do a lot of shape changing so...

The Switch is mounted on a thin piece of aluminum which is glued to the inside of the box. If it isn't obvious from the pics, I cut a round hole in the box the same shape as the opening in the switch cover.

To get the switch cover to stay open is pretty easy. If you look at the back of your switch cover, you will see a part of the spring anchored there. It is bent into kind of a square shape. Okay, now open you switch cover and watch where that goes - you will notice a notch cut out of the base to allow this part to pass unhindered. What I did was to glue a very thin piece of aluminum over that notch. Now that bit of the spring acts like a stopper!:)

The mouth pieces are cut from aluminum with a dremel and filed/sanded to shape. The prongs are cut down nails. These nails came with nylon anchors which I cut the heads off of. I painted the heads black, cut down the nails, and glued them inside the heads of the anchors. After gluing the LAN cable ot the backs of the mouthpieces, I glued in the prongs.

Here's the template I made for cutting my mouthpieces:

Enjoy!

Thanks again for the compliments!

I have more of them but they look very slightly different in the way they are cast. However I can't send one for at least two months as I am not at home.

I know the guy who made this prop for the show. I showed him this thread. He said you guys "nailed the case and parts" so nice work!
