Ive wanted to build an R2 for quite a few years now but never did due to the cost.
I decided to give 3d printing one a go after i saw michael baddeleys files.
I have finished most of this build, i decided to get most of it done before i posted it in case i had too many problems with the print.
I printed in abs on my Lulzbot Taz 5.
I had a lot of problems with some of the prints warping.

I started with the dome, if i gave up later i would still have a dome for display.

I think it was 12 pieces welded together.
The whole thing was filled then sanded then filled again. Finished with Dolphin glaze putty.

I did redo the rub n buff a few times as it kept coming out patchy. Ended up buying a new tube.

I kept getting belts slipping and when they did grip wheelspin.
I ordered some scooter wheels and belts.

I used 100w 24d scooter motors but found they weren't really powerful enough on a carpeted floor so upgraded to 150w 24v.

Looks great!!

The dome in black looked fantastic! Not that it doesn’t now lol, just the glossiness of it.

Mounted speaker behind the front grill
The wiring is a bit messy at this time.

I decided to go for the padawan 360 control system

I used a Sabertooth dual 32a speed controller, was one of the only ones in stock and a syren 10 for the dome.
A Sparkfun mp3 board for sound and an Arduino mega for the programming. all mounted on a chopping board.

Fitted the Teece lighting in the dome

Looks awesome. I'm almost done printing mine. It's a tedious project but pretty cool to see the end results, especially when you consider the process of it all.

I'm blown away by this. Having built an R2, and having done lots of 3d printing, I can fully appreciate the amount of insane work it takes to get the clean glossy finish like you have.
Bravo!

Thanks everyone.
The motors were from eBay.
The dome was painted with a silver paint then gone over with silver rub n buff

I think I signed up there a while ago. Never posted though. Will have to check the site out again.

Nice work! Especially the paint jobs came out great for 3D printing!
Considering it’s life-sized makes this even more impressive. ;)
