Game of Thrones Ice Sword-Wolf Scabbard Build (WARNING: May be offensive to some.)

Hey Guys,

I ordered a Game of Thrones Ice Sword from Valyrian Steel and I thought I'd create a scabbard for it.

Ultimately, I want to have something that will protect the sword long-term and I've always loved the history of Ice and it's place in Westeros lore as a Great Sword. So I thought I might do it justice by creating an accurate replica of the sheath seen in the HBO show.

Here's a screen cap of what I'm going for:

You don't see it very much - and I'd be grateful any additional screen caps anyone has from the show, DVD extras, HBO Specials, etc. to help with my build. Anything will help and if you have better shots of the head, especially the mouth area or leather sheath, even better.

So far, I have one essential part of the scabbard, which is the fur pelt the leather sheath is housed in. (I really hope this doesn't offend anyone and I apologize if it does.)

This pelt is is Origin Assured, meaning it has been sourced from an approved species and from an approved country by the International Fur Trade Federation.

I tried to research as much as I could but there wasn't much information to be found. As far as I can tell, the show prop looks to be made from a wolf as it's the only animal large enough to hold a Great Sword.

The pelt I chose is from a Black Wolf. I think it best represents the colour of the animal seen on the show.

If there's any interest, I'll keep you guys updated on my progress.

Cheers!

i live up here in wyoming and come from a family of hunters....we literally kill what we eat and i have no problem what so ever with this thread.
people up here get paid to kill wolfs because they eat the livestock....its good to know that the pelt is not going to waste and is being used.

i wouldn't worry about it though.... you will always offend someone no matter what you do....so just do what your gonna do.
i look forward to see how this turns out

I was looking for nudie pics, what was offensive?

Re: Game of Thrones Ice Sword-Wolf Scabbard Build (WARNING: May be offensive to some.

Huh, it actually never occurred to me to replicate it with the fur. I'd be going for the scabbard we see later on, which seems to be more traditional wood/leather.

Thanks for your support! :thumbsup

Hopefully, it'll turn out well. I still gotta rebuild the face into a more recognizable shape. I've never worked with this material before, so I've got my fingers crossed that it'll cooperate with me.

Lol I'll let the show do that part!

I don't remember seeing another scabbard for Ice.

Would you be able to provide a screen cap or describe what season and episode you saw it in?

I'd love to base the internal leather scabbard off that if appropriate.

Re: Game of Thrones Ice Sword-Wolf Scabbard Build (WARNING: May be offensive to some.

My mistake, I thought the sword used in season one to fight Jaime Lannister was Ice, but on second viewing, it wasn't. :(

Ah gotcha! I didn't remember any other scabbard being used to house Ice; though I wasn't really looking for it when I was watching the show.

I assumed the wolf pelt scabbard was used throughout the series since... *** Season 4 SPOILER below ***

... in Season 4 Episode 1, Tywin was seen to have thrown the pelt into the fire after he melted down Ice for Oathkeeper and Widow's Wail.

Small Update

Something I'll need to do first is to reshape the wolf head - the head is completely misshapen:

And there are several skinning cuts in the head which I'll need to sew up.

I purchased some foam today and I'll need to shape it into a form that's close to a wolf's head. I've never done this before - I've only ever seen it done in SFX videos and shows like Mythbusters.

The foam I purchased is floral foam which seems to be easy to carve - I just hope it has the right firmness to allow the pelt to hold a shape. And I glued 2 blocks together with some white glue... will it be strong enough to hold them together?

And I found an image of a wolf skull online which I resized to match the dimensions of the head on the pelt. I added a musculature outline to the image and will use that as the base for shaping the foam.

Wow. That looks stunning. How much does it weigh?

Re: Game of Thrones Ice Sword-Wolf Scabbard Build (WARNING: May be offensive to some.

Guesstimating based on picture; if metal and wood around 4-6kg, if resin around 2-4kg ...

Also, if you were wanting the real deal to go with our real fur, here's a $139 Gray Wolf skull:

Or a $100 resin replica for the faint of heart:

There are also dog and fox skulls for a lot cheaper ($30~+)you could probably substitute.
Subscribed btw!!

Lol I just weighed it on my scale - it's 9 lbs (4.1 kg).

The sword is made entirely out of various metals and wood. The neat thing about this sword compared to most of Valyrian Steel's other swords is this version of Ice is a full tang sword; whereas the others are not.

Haha that's a hilarious ref. Yup... it's basically what the fur looks like on my table.

Damn, I didn't know skulls were so expensive! I'll try to do it on the cheap first. It's cost me $3 for all the sculpting materials so far. Although, I've never tried sculpting, so I might end up getting a skull if it doesn't work out.

Thanks for the sub! I'll keep you updated on my modelling progress.

I definitely thought there would be a cheaper replica available. Although, you COULD try to track yourself down a skull from the woods or something. My brother found a massive bull skull with horns intact while crossing a grass field. All he had to do was toss it in an ant hill for a few days and let them pick it clean, then bleached it.

Probably more work than you are wanting to do, but it's an option. I look forward to your progress!

Re: Game of Thrones Ice Sword-Wolf Scabbard Build (WARNING: May be offensive to some.

By the look of the head part of the scabbard on the show, it looks a little flat and out of shape anyway so i don't think you should try to do it all to neat. Also are you going to even fit that sword in that pelt? I got my Ice sword today and wow it's big.

Re: Game of Thrones Ice Sword-Wolf Scabbard Build (WARNING: May be offensive to some.

Thanks for the weight. Now all I need is a review before I decide on buying one! ;)

It absolutely will! I purchased a pelt that's marries with the blade. In the show, the guard of the sword lies just in front of the wolf's eyes when fully in the scabbard and I plan on replicating the same fit for mine.

Here's Ser Ilyn Payne just before he starts to remove the sword from the wolf scabbard.
