Gladiator 2 in works by Ridley Scott

Every now and then an actor just stands out from their character enough that it's THEM "playing" a part. From the trailer, Denzel IS Denzel, didn't seem like a character in a movie. It annoys the crap out of me when this happens and I can never fully enjoy the movie.

Some actors are just NOT good in period pieces. Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York is another one.

It's been 25 years. The original movie was widely seen back then, but I dunno how many of today's 13yo kids have seen it. And the star actor aged out of that role years ago. He doesn't even look similar now. Modern VFX can also do more (well, do it more comfortably) than 25 years ago. I'd say the first movie meets all the criteria for a full remake now.

Denzel looks like a potentially interesting character. I bet they put some 'Training Day' villain in there. I suspect that the actor's death hurt the Proximo character in the first movie. It seemed like his scenes were unfinished. Maybe they can do a better job this time.

The new Maximus replacement looks like a problem though. I'm glad they didn't pick some cartoonish celebrity type like John Cena, but this guy in the trailer didn't seem to have much of that 'rage' they were talking about.

I'm not encouraged about the new nutjob Emperor either. He looks way too on-the-nose. Trying too hard. It's the Jared Leto Joker after we had the Health Ledger Joker last time.

Ridley does this sometimes where the casting is eccentric. Oddly it could work. Or not. That said, not for me. The original is a classic.

Ridley is such a hit or miss filmmaker. There was a great comment I read: "Ridley makes a movie and the gods flip a coin."

I didn't really care for the first one that much so a repeat does nothing for me. This seems so out of left field. Apparently ancient Romans still have British accents in movies. Yep, they're still doing that.

I'll watch it when it hits streaming.

Not a knock on the film, just...I dunno...not something I feel NEEEEEEEEDS to be seen in the theater. To be fair, though, the only film I've seen in a theater since probably 2017 was Dune 2.

Then there's actors like Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer. I realized when I was watching that movie that wasn't subconsciously seeing the actor anymore. I saw Oppenheimer....

Training Day set in Ancient Rome, you say?

Well, that trailer had some silly things in it.

Like, besides Denzel Washington?

They took some liberties with chronology & details. But the broad strokes weren't out of line IMO. Ships doing naval battles in arenas was a real thing. Humans fighting captured wild animals was a popular event. Etc.

You know there are sharks in the water in the trailer. No laser beams attached to their heads, but really.

Sharks!

40 second mark.

The ships and animals is well taught (the animal cruelty was pretty bad I try not to think on it much) but man, that rhino riding just made me react negatively. The Hip Hop didn't help either. Gladiator had such an amazing score. I doubt Hip Hop will be in the film and was just a marketing decision.

A bit on topic, I'm loosely named after Marcus Aurelius, Mom said no to Dad, she wasn't keen on naming their baby straight up that.
Damn. LOL

Decided to pick up a coin depicting him though recently, Mars on the back. Another collecting rabbit hole I better avoid. LOL

The hip-hop was a bit much. But yeah, it's probably just marketing. The movie will probably sound traditional during the drama. That hip-hop song will show up as the 2nd track during the end credits or something.

As for the sharks, I'd be in favor of giving them laser beams. IMO sharks should be exempt from all normal rules of movie realism.

When I saw the gladiator rhino, at first I thought it was ridiculous. Then admittedly, it looked kinda cool haha.

Hans Zimmer is not returning to do the score for this one (said he did not want to repeat himself).

Harry Gregson-Williams, a former assistant to Zimmer, will be doing the score.

Why, what’s this???

We have TWO twisted and snotty Roman Emperors?

DOUBLE the Commodus?????

Are they trying to ensure that they are not bested by Twisters??

I think that Denzel is one of those actors who really can't help but to either play themselves or a certain character type because they've been at it for so long. Bruce Willis was certainly like that before he retired, it could be argued that Tom Hanks is in that same category as well, except for when he voices Woody. At the same time, it's not necessarily all the actor's fault, I think that sometimes actors are unknowingly typecast, they do a certain character type so well that directors cast them based on that one or maybe two roles and want them to repeat that performance in this new role. It may not be the same genre or exactly the same character but certainly a variation on the character and the actor doesn't quite realize, or care, that they've been effectively typecast.
