Hardware Sonic Screwdriver

You could get one of those lens cleaner brushes and use it for the main body. Just attach the head and smaller shaft into the brush and then you'd have a thumb slide to raise and lower it. I was looking at one the other day at walmart and thought it would be a cool base for a custom sonic.

Just an idea, in the end just follow your own creativity and you won't go wrong. :cool

That would be a cool idea for a contest. A custom sonic screwdriver type contest.:lol

I've thought about that myself, but I just don't have time right now. Maybe we should organize one for sometime in March or April.

I agree but I don't want too many restrictions. Run it like the hardware saber contests we used to have back in the day.

We should start an interest thread and not highjack this one any longer. ;)

Those Lens Cleaners are kinda interesting. I may have to pick one up next week and see what I can do with it.

Very nice classic variation.

I was shopping for a ceiling fan chain pull in the local hardware store and noticed one that looked very similar to the tip of that fuzzy picture of the 11th Doctor's Sonic.

The more I look at that picture the more it looks like it's bashed out of bits that one would find in the hardware department. Though it has a much remarked on spark plug look, but don't the ends of look a lot like the handles of those mini-screwdrivers one sees for $1 in the bargain bins?

I wonder if the only custom molded or sculpted bit might be the emitter end?

I wonder if anyone in living in Wales walked around the local hardware stores might see any hardware bits that could be the origin of the 9th/10th Doctor screwdriver or especially the 11th's?

Great idea on the hardware sonic contest!

And wonderful hardware Sonic, looks great!

I would be up for it. I love making sonics. Most of mine are static but look good. I have wanted to try a light up one but just haven't had the time recently.

It's not bad actually. Considering the things they make props out of some times this is pretty good. ^_^

If we do a hardware sonic contest with lathes be permitted?

I would do it as two categories (hardware and machined.) or even two different contests. Either way, i would call it something like "custom sonic screw driver contest" Because, we really don't need to see 30 different machinists take on an "accurate" classic sonic.

I replied but I started it in a new thread so as to not highjack this one.

OK, I normally don't reproduce somebody else's work, but I REALLY like the little custom driver you made TheNextDoctor. Please tell us the exact model of tire gage, type of beveled washer, and size of o-rings so I can hit the hardware store and make myself one this weekend (and which major chain did you do your shopping at so I can get the same parts?)

Also, how did you connect the "halo" portion to the top? A simple sketch of the overall assembly in cross-section would be much appreciated. Helpful tip: sharpie or black marker shows up much better on cell-phone pics than pencil or ball-point pen does.

Looking forward to making my own with a few tweaks.

Since I am adding functionality to this version, I will tear it down and take pictures with a better tutorial for the static version. I am 90% done with the mechanics of the spring mechanism, but I haven't started on it. I will try and get the tutorial started this evening
