Has anyone done a HL-10 Lifting body?

Don't worry feek, I am still reading it. But I can only say "neat, cool, wow" so many times before it seems like brown nosing man. ;)

Seriously, I am glad you are tackling this project as you've got some great skills there and a passion for the subject I've not seen too often in others. I read every update you put out with eager anticipation as this is a great project (and I love the DVDs).

I know it's been a while since I updated the build; it's because I've been too busy to work on it, lol. I did a little on the back fins and control surfaces.

I also did the modified fin tips. Not sure if you can see them here:

And the real thing:

I am really liking what I see, especially with the control surface work in the rear. What scale is this model going to be BTW (I could probably backtrack to find that answer though). I also see you added the tufts to the leading edges of the tails. Nice touch!

Ahhh, nice and big. Of course, the scale has to be big since the craft is so diminutive in size. It will make a nice companion piece to a 1/24 Revell Gemini (and that kit might make the perfect donor for a pressure suited pilot).

Yes, the Gemini astronauts are perfect (and I just happened to have a few, lol). Well finally today I actually attached the control surfaces so of course I took some photos, lol.

DH, if it weren't for you I wouldn't be in the mess, lol

Still working on this. I have re-done the fin tips (the geometry was backwards somehow; go figure) and the tip modifications (forgive the crappy cell phone photos).

Since it's been so hot I was working on another project which is a lifting body website. It's still under construction but you can check it out here:

Home Page

Here is one of the graphics I did for it showing the markings:

Let me know what you think keeping in mind it's a work in progress.

Ohhh, you just had to go out and make a lifting body website, knowing FULL well I had to go and bookmark it! Thanks man!!!!

I pulled my own Eagles Talon and Anigran Lifting body kits out of storage and they are calling me to work on them again (I am resisting right now though as I have two other things I HAVE to finish first). At the IPMS Nationals in Omaha last month, one builder brought three very nicely done 1/72 lifting bodies and entered them into the contest. He built the Muroc Models M2-F1, the Eagles Talon M2-F3 and an Anigrand HL-10. All looked exceptional and his M2-F3 took an award in the vaccuform category. I picked up the Muroc M2-F1 and it is a jewel of a kit. Muroc also does it in 1/48 as well. Only thing I need to pick up now to make my Lifting Body collection in 1/72 complete is the X-38 CRV.

I recieved a box set of the Six Million Dollar Man for Christmas..GOTTA get my paws on a first rate HL-10 now :) Seriously, this craft had it all..It was a sexy precursor to the shuttle, has it's own chapter in Sci-Fi history, and was just a beaut.

Feek, any word on this build? I'd do anything for a kit of this!

I agree with you on what a great aircraft this is. I'm sorry to say I have made no progress on the model since the above photos were taken. I will get back to it one day and I am looking for forward to it. I have to say that even in its current state it looks great. It's just such a cool, sexy shape with all of those curves. :)

With the recent release of the Six Million Dollar Man dvd box-set, I'm hoping for renewed interest in this craft. After all, it is a key element to arguably the finest opening title sequence in TV history. I'm surprised there are so few kits of the HL-10 :( In any case, you've done some exceptional work with your build of her, Feek!

So Feek... ever get back to working on this curvy beauty of yours? You can rebuild it... you have the technology. ;)

Hi folks,

I'm drawing a set of plans for a flying model of the HL-10, using the views and sections from the NASA 3-views I found online (they're on this thread too, I suppose - it's a treasure trove!). On these drawings, at station "I/206" there is a significant curve to the bottom surface which is not found at stations H or J. The photographs of the bottom surface don't show such a sudden curvature, and I was wondering if there were better photos showing it, or if the section from the drawing is incorrect.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks.

Andy

My flying model is coming along. I was able to resolve the issues with the errors in the 3-view, and in the process found a really great tool for 3D modeling of complex shapes like this one. It's called DevFus and is available from Profili 2.0 - software for wing airfoils managing, drawing and analysis - free download.

For those interested in what it took to get this far, I have a build thread going over on RCGroups. Google will find it if you search for my name and HL-10.

Andy
