How many clear coats?

What is the "right amount" of clear coats for something that will be handled often? I usually use two coats, but I'm wondering if I should use more after noticing a spot of wear on one of my guns.

This might depend on the product you're using. Two to three coats is usually sufficient for lacquer.
Just follow procedure and let each coat dry for 5 to 10 minutes before applying the next. I would say if you wanted a 4th coat or more, let cure overnight, lightly scuff the cured clear coat (to promote adhesion) and then apply two more coats.

I usually use rattlecan Testors Dullcote. It is lacquer I think. I'm just wondering if I dropped it and forgot because usually two coats is good. I thought maybe people would say I need more than that.

For auto paint with hardener, I'd say 1-2 coats. For a standard rattle can... as many as you feel like. I used something like 10-12 layers on things like Star Lord quad blaster grips, or the grip on Agent K's Blade Runner 2049 blaster, mainly because it gives a certain 'depth' to them and takes away that 'spray painted' look.
