John Hammond Jurassic Park costume

Dr. Jones Sr:
I thought I'd share my efforts at both John Hammond and Dr. Henry Jones, Sr. By honest coincidence I, too, chose these characters to cosplay, although I must bow to your experience and expertise and in the case of Jones, I'm heavily indebted to you for all the information you have posted on the character and his costume. I'm a great deal shorter than both you and Connery, but I think I've managed to capture the outlines of the character. I hope you approve.

Regards,

Barry

It's been a while, I've done Hammond at several Cons, it's an easy to put on and super comfortable to wear costume.

I acquired a new hat. My original hat was more of a "plantation" hat style, the brim was too wide and the top too tin-can-shaped.

Whenever I see a hat shop I look for a Hammond-style hat and a few months ago I found one. It's a cheap hat but the style is bang-on.

I've been working on the watch tips but didn't get them done in time for WonderCon yesterday.

After years of looking I finally found mens-watch-size watch tips in gold colour (gold wash, not gold plated).

I'm removing the Turquoise and I'm going to put in little Amber cabochons. Here's a couple WIP photos, and I pic of me at WonderCon yesterday.

I love that I have to separate the actor from your posts in my mind. I see your pose and it is just like looking at him. You really bring this home.

Got one side done!

This is something I've needed to get done for a long time, and now the pressure is on, with three Cons in the space of four weeks coming up!

Indeed it looks like you've spared no expense! Very well done, and I love seeing the commitment in looking for specific accessoiries like the watch tips for years. Such dedication is very inspiring!
They look great BTW and not a detail I ever noticed, even though I have watched the film ALOT.
If you ever get that Dino Park up and running, I'll be waiting for an invite! :p

Ya, I am still hoping to get a con photo with this epic cosplayer but we haven't crossed paths yet.

There are various kinds of cosplayers, including

Cosplayers that do the research, then spare no expense or amount of work to get every detail screen accurate from the get-go.

Cosplayers that do the research, throw together a "close enough" costume for Cons, but continue the process of upgrading the costume bit by bit over the years.

I'm in the latter camp.

I think the 2016 Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland was my first foray into Cosplay, literally a Closet Cosplay of Dr Henry Walton Jones Senior. But everybody recognised me! And a couple people said "best costume ever!" But I knew that not a single part of my costume was accurate.

So began years of upgrading every bit of that costume. Every time I replaced what I was using for something better my costume inched a bit closer to Screen Accurate. Will it ever be Screen Accurate? No, it won't. And I think that's what keeps me interested in the costume.

All my cosplays are like that. I recently got a much better Hammond hat, and now I'll have a much better Hammond watch. My glasses aren't perfect but they're very close, which will do for now.

After years of doing Old Ben Kenobi I finally got tired of my robe being too light-coloured so I threw it in a vat of dark brown dye.

And so it goes!

The gap between what we as cosplayers/costume builders, and what 'regular' people would say is a good costume, is something to consider as well. I think I might be one of the ones that want to do everything well from the get-go haha.
Though upgrading is something I'd say is always worth considering, if it elevates what you have!

From my first time doing Dr Jones Senior I was on the lookout for THE pocketwatch. It took me seven years to find one.

Just last year I got much more accurate glasses, cobbled together from two different 1930s frames and modern lenses nicked from a pair of "fashion" glasses.

I think the bowtie I'm wearing is my fifth one. It's the closest yet, but still not Screen Accurate. I have a large number of ongoing online searches for ties. I look at 20 or 30 ties a day, and have done for nine years. I will probably will never come across the correct one. To get the tie Screen Accurate would mean having bespoke silk fabric woven.

Ditto the shirt, I've looked at piles of shirts but shirts in that fabric simply don't exist because the fabric doesn't exist. It would have to be woven.

Around five years in to doing the character I had a bespoke hat and suit made. It was the only way to get the correct ones. The tie and shirt will probably never happen.

This is where the real fun is, hoping to find the holy grail.... of ties, watches, etcetera.

You're right, the Quest for the Grail is what it's about. That part, at least, I do have (y)

The tie, not so much. And just a couple weeks ago somebody found a better photo of the shoes, which suggest that they're not quite as I thought them to be. I thought I had the shoes nailed, perhaps not! Time for new shoes apparently.
