Large bone sources? (Princess Mononoke knife)

I'm planning on making the bone knife from Princess Mononoke, but I cannot find a good source for a large enough bone. I'm assuming the blade is made from bone because she basically lives in the woods and the blade is white. Also, it is spear-tip shaped (she has a matching spear) and at one point she grabs the blade toward the handle (must be dull) to assist in stabbing as opposed to slashing. It's a large knife, I'd say at least 10"-12" total.

I thought about picking up a "mammoth" bone from a pet store, but I'm not sure they have ones that could be wide enough.

Anyone know of a source that sells legitimate animal (any) bones or bone slabs around 12" long and 3"-4" wide?

That size if going to be pretty tough to get.

When I opted to have my ruby daggers made out of bone (hey, it was an option and sounded badass) the guy ended up sourcing some camel bone from overseas. The blade is only like 7-8 inches long and maybe 1.5" wide, and it took him a bit to find slabs to use to make em.

Camel bone is pretty huge though, so maybe start checking various sites for taxidermy or bone pieces and run from there.

I have a dagger from Papa New Guinea that's made out of a cassowary leg, and it's pretty long, but not really wide enough for what you are looking for. Plus it's curved a bit.

Good luck with it though!

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that I won't be able to go as wide as I want to with it. Thanks for the specifics though. I keep seeing camel bone as a good source for thick blades.

That was my original intent, but at this rate, maybe not.

A dark brown/ebony wood stain applied over a well cured white primer, then immediately wiped (to remove excess and provide streaks) can provide a good bone look.

I might just do that. I thought of using flint or stone, but I have no idea how napping stone works lol. I have some pine laying around, so I'll try that out. Hopefully I can make a bone one though.

Smooth-Cast 300 (10 minute demould) sets white and can very easily be washed with a thin translucent layer of beige/brown acrylic or latex paint and drybrushed to look exactly like bone or ivory. That is, if you want to go the sculpt/mould/cast route. Can get a bit pricey depending on what you use for your mould

Cheers!

Good idea as well. I have some thinking to do on it.
