Licensed Indy Fedora

Another vote here for the Akubra Federation IV. I received mine in 9 days (Australia to Southern California) and IMO it looks exactly like the hat worn by Ford in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull; a Raider's bash takes a little extra work, but it can be done. Also, Akubra hats are known for their durability and tolerance of abuse, so you're likely to be wearing it long after the "officially licensed" hats have been relegated to the local landfill.

But don't take my word for it. Read the many posts on Club Obi Wan singing the praises of the Fed IV (and the other quality Indiana Jones hats currently available, if you wish) for yourself.

Hey! I know you from HobbyTalk!(y)cheers

Thanks for that info!! I didn't know that you were also a costume fan!

Yes Sir, you certainly do! :cheers Nice to see you here Huzz!

I'd consider myself more of a prop collector than a costumer, and I'm certainly a novice in both areas, but I got into costuming a few years ago when I decided to do a full-blown Jedi costume for Halloween; before that it was mostly inexpensive, last-minute, hastily thrown together generic zombie costumes. Then I discovered Club Obi Wan after seeing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and deciding to finally get the Fedora I've wanted ever since I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark back in 1981. Now I'm hooked and, in addition to the Fedora, I have a Wested jacket, made myself a gunbelt, ordered a Mk VII bag, and I'm looking into the various options for the rest of the gear. And I thought building styrene/resin/vinyl models was addictive... :unsure

I also reccomend the Federation IV. Beautiful hat!!!! I wear mine every day. I love it so much!! Here are a few pics of mine...It's a standard fed IV not a deluxe.

Thanks for the pics Veg!! What whip is that? Are they expensive?

Zombie, I hear ya! I bought a Rubies Supreme Vader costume on an impulse a couple of years ago and I've been upgrading it ever since. I've managed to snag one of the Master Replicas Episode III helmets - man is that thing nice! And I've gotten some nice ABS shin guards, A metal buckle, a new chest box, nice leather ROTS gloves and an accurate metal armor chain. Here's the lid:

On the Indy costume, check out WWW.Indygear.com if you haven't already. I'm lucky enough to have a jacket that will pass casual inspection for the time being. I've ordered two WWII British gas mask bag from Omahas.com for only $9.00 each. Although I should have gotten the correct one like you did. I may get the shirt next, plus a cheap whip and a whip holder (only ten bucks). Add a nice hat like the one Veg posted pics of and I'll have a pretty decent but cost effective Indy costume.

Come October 31, I can be Vader for parts of the day and switch to Indy for a break! I'll post some pics of the Omahas.com bag when it arrives!

Thanks for the compliment...The whip is a 10 foot indy style whip made by Joe Strain. It was close to 500 bucks when I bought it 3 or 4 years ago.

Nice lid there Huzz! I have a Rubies Supreme Vader as well; thought it would make a nice companion piece to my original issue "El Cheapo" Don Post Vader from the 70's. One of these days I might actually make good on my threat to clean 'em up and make 'em look presentable. ;)

Thanks for the tip, but I'm way ahead of you. I go by "Zombie Jones" on the Club Obi Wan forum; arguably the best online source for information on original Indy costume items and costume/prop replica options. :thumbsup

Zombie Jones, eh?

Excellent!!! I may have to ask you some questions! By the way, I got the bag from Omahas.com. It makes a very nice bag for a kid's costume, but I am disappointed in it for an adult. My 5 yr old son and his friend were running around here last night playing Indiana Jones so at least they got a kick out of 'em!

Yeah...I go by "Zombie_61" on every other forum, and I wanted to change it up a bit with something that sounded a bit "Indyish" but still kept the "zombie" in there. And the double meaning worked for me on a subliminal level, as in "I got a jones for zombies". :p For those unfamiliar with the term:

Jones: noun, slang. An addiction; to have an eager or intense desire. "I was jonesing for some caffeine."

I'll be happy to share what little knowledge I have. For my bag, I went with Todd's Costumes replica Mk VII. It's slightly undersized (1" too short from what I've read) but nobody I know would notice and, for $40 including the strap, it fit my budget. Nice to hear your son has put your bag to good use!

The biggest decision for me will be the whip. Since I've never so much as held a whip I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, but I also don't want a cheap eBay costume whip that won't crack (you just know somebody's gonna ask you to crack your whip if you're carrying one). I've pretty much decided on a Gus Caicedo 8' 8 plait; I don't need something that's 100% screen-accurate, and his whips come highly recommended on Club Obi Wan as a good "starter" whip. Ah, the joys of costuming! :lol

Hi Zombie!!

I agree on the Todd's costume bag - it looks quite good! I figure the Akubra Federation hat is clearly the way to go!

I've been looking over at Todd's Costumes and his Indy shirt looks good. What do you think? I see he also has a nice whip belt holder for a mere ten dollars!

Have you checked out the thread here where the fellow is making an Indy costume for his son? Very cool!

That's why I bought one. There are good alternatives in the same price range, but Akubra's reputation for durability is what really sold me. And I received it nine days after I ordered it; no waiting a year for an AdventureBilt, Lee Keppler, or Herbert Johnson. :D And, IMO, it looks just like the hat Ford wore in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (minus the dirt, of course).

After looking at the various comparison threads on Club Obi Wan I've decided on Todd's shirt for myself; I'm waiting for them to re-stock my size. And I'm planning to order their whip holder at the same time. Two great minds... ;)

Yes, I've been following that thread. He's done a remarkable job, and his son looks great in the costume! Too bad he'll outgrow it before long, but it'll be a nice keepsake.
