now seeing this pic, and how clear the black wire is coming out the bottom.. i dont know now if i still believe the "mystery chunk" plugs the power wire hole...

Re: V2, V3 & ANH Obi Stunt Lightsaber builds

I finally got round to giving my new Starkiller V2 a coat of black paint, I masked off the clamp spacer & the Emitter Nipple (as far as I can tell from the ANH pics that part wasn't ever black)

to be honest I probably put it on too thick & it came out a touch more textured than I'd like (they seem to have changed something in my normal satin black paint as I've had this problem painting my Leia blaster too)

i considered taking it back off but thought Hey I'm gonna weather it anyway & I can't imagine the originals were painted that delicately :lol

I thought I'd take some pics pre weathering (AFB) as kind of a dry run for my Russrep ANH stunt paint

at the moment I'm leaning towards an all black paint job for it, I know there is the pic of a stunt with a brownish copper neck & grey emmiter but others look all black? We know there were more than 1 Obi Stunts & it still doesn't make sense to me that they'd repaint it black post ANH given how battered it was even in the ESB practice pics & then in ROTJ (but I could be wrong) + I like how the all black looks & feels like an evolution between the 2 incarnations.

I started weathering the Starkiller, well I took the paint off the rings with the edge of a knife, but it's a start

Re: V2, V3 & ANH Obi Stunt Lightsaber builds

Slow progress not no progress :lol

not it had a lot of time to work on this, so far I've only weathered the Emitter face & Booster (which have taken a couple of hours with a cocktail stick)

Soooo much more to go

Re: V2, V3 & ANH Obi Stunt Lightsaber builds

Your weathering is looking great, particularly the emitter face. How many days of drying do you allow your paint before going at it with the cocktail stick/toothpick?

Re: V2, V3 & ANH Obi Stunt Lightsaber builds

I'd like to add this picture. It may be that there was brass on the upper neck and not on the lower half, the grenade they used was pretty black.

Also, there were at least two Hero's right? (different grenades) what if they made stunts that matched the coloring of one, and then the coloring of the other.

I think I painted it back on Saturday, I had no plan regards drying time, I'm just working on it as & when

the paint was dry after 24hrs, it's hard going with the cocktail sticks but it doesn't scratch the finish like a file, blade etc ( I want it weathered not scratched :lol)

my feeling is that the V2 was always all black whilst the V3 had the brass neck/grey emitter (do we know that there weren't other stunts which haven't survived?)

given how slap dash most of the prop continuity was I'm not sure they'd have bothered to deliberately replicate 2 finishes on the stunts but who knows

if the V2 ever had a brass windvane/neck then you'd think at least some of the paint would remain even in its battered appearance

Re: V2, V3 & ANH Obi Stunt Lightsaber builds

My slow progress finally started to feel like it was getting somewhere :lol

I finished my first round of weathering on the emitter & body & then finally tried a test fit

I used to rubber rings on the metal rod to hold the bearing in place (not sure how this'll hold up over time but it's working for now)

I finally added the D-Ring which I found super stressful & made a complete hash of :facepalm

first I cut out a small section in the centre of the D-Ring & then just tried to bend a little to get it in to place, managed to put a dirty great scratch on the pommel cube

I think the pommel is looking a little shiny so I'm planning to very lightly sand & then use a little wire wool on it to dull the finish

just waiting for my square set screw/mystery Chunk now

i had to add a little bit of electrical tape on the inside of the clamp to keep it from sliding round too much

Re: V2, V3 & ANH Obi Stunt Lightsaber builds

I love the rubber washer idea!

:lol Thanks, though it's not particularly clever & I'm sure I'm not the first to do it, it's just what I had to hand

it does give a nice tight adjustable fit, I don't like gluing things on my props I usually like things to be reversible & able to be taken apart (not sure why)

I'm kinda wishing I'd very lightly sanded the Emitter before painting to match the Body (which looked pre sanded!) but I'll live as I don't fancy re painting & re weathering

I think I do need to give the pommel a light sand (& a few knocks)

looking forward to getting my mystery chunk but not to installing it :lol I've drilled various holes in my V2 & V3 but it always makes me nervous, I start off with a hand drill & then finish with a proper drill but no drill press or anything just me trying to hold it still.

Re: V2, V3 & ANH Obi Stunt Lightsaber builds

I had to order mine from McMasterCarr. It sucks just buying one thing from there, but if you have a list of like 5-6 different types of hardware you need, regardless, for different projects, is not horrible. Because I needed a 5/16 bore shaft collar, I'm pretty sure I was only gonna find it online.

You don't happen to have the list number u used to order still do you?

The rubber washer idea is nice. I ended up using a shaft collar for mine so there's not glue and everything is held together mechanically.

These are sold in tandem with the square set screw at the hardware store I frequent. It's funny how that store usually doesn't have what I'm looking for but is now the place to go to find the things everyone else is looking for.:p

I really like this idea, it's not going to corrode or split or pop off like rubber could :lol

I found a set of 7 on eBay for £1 they're all different sizes but one of them is 5/16" & I figure the others may end up being good for something

thanks for the tip :)
