Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The

I received my samples today and to be perfectly honest they just didn't have the wow factor I expected.

Personally, I can't see spending $125 for a print when I can get what looks to a great print from Juno's printer for less then $40.

I may forget about doing my run of archival prints (again)

Let me just ask, is there any interest for a print of this map on archival artist paper with brown ink in the $125 price range?

Okay, here is my gift to you.

He may quote you a little more on the print -- I think I got a bit of a break in the cost (but it wasn't much of one).

Contact Jeff Cline at Fastsigns (513) 396-7446. He has the high-res as a .tiff in both black and brown.

He said he would arrange shipping, etc.

wow, this map is amazing, buti really cant afford to spend that much on a map, and would much rather spend 40 or less

it will go great with sarumans staff i just snagged on ebay for 30 bucks.

BD,

Because you are so anal about your props is why I WOULD have spent $125 to buy one from you. The fact that you posted it didn't meet your wow factor shows just how much you cared about providing a great looking map. Too bad that they couldn't provide you with a better product. Looks like the $40 one now. Thank you again for at least trying to provide us with the best possible route.

I'd be interested in an archival map at that price BD if it met the necessary wow factor.

Sadly, not yet :(

Big LotR fan that I am, I want this thing done right.

I'll take one. and by "take" I mean "pay for".

Can you post a pic? What's lacking in the 'wow' factor?

I can't really capture the look of the samples with digital photography but I will try to explain it better.

I guess I was expecting to look at the samples and say to myself, holy crap, that does look a lot better then other prints I have seen.

But instead, I just thought, "well, that looks like it came off my inkjet".

They did include a color sample that's amazing but the brown ink just looks too "regular" to see any benefit of using their process.

I guess the main benefit, according to them, is that their prints are done with inks and papers that are specifically designed for the reproduction of art and they are meant to be archival, i.e. they are meant to last a life time.

Both samples are very thick and feel heavier then card stock.

To give you an idea of how thick they are here is a comparison.

Regular paper is .003" thick

Card Stock is .008" thick

Both of the archival papers are .016" thick

1/64 of and inch is .015" so the artists papers are little thicker then 1/64 of an inch.

If anyone is an expert with printing medium I would be glad to send these sample to you for review.

Just one question: what is that tower to the east of Mordor, on the edge of the map? I don't remember there being a tower out there.

Personally, I always wondered what was supposed to be past middle earth. I mean, the map is only bordered by water on one side... whats on all the other land? Then I saw the maps in my copy of the Silmarilion.... and realized they didn't seem to fit :lol

Check out The Encyclopedia of Arda. It has lots of maps of the different regions of Arda.

I really felt the canvas material that I printed the time Bandits maps on really added to the WOW factor of those maps. Plus the weathering did a lot for it.

We were going for the look in the film of course with that one.

Unfortunately I no longer have access to that equipment.

Think canvas. Really makes a map like that pop.

Just a few thoughts.

Kinko's had a canvas-like material for printing that runs $12 a square foot. The material is archival quality, but the printing was not.

The map in the Silmarillion shows Beleriand and much of the Northwest of Middle-earth. The Middle-earth map most are familiar with, and this thread is about, is directly below that map from the Silmarillion. The combined areas of these maps are about a quarter of the total landmass of the Middle-earth continent. None of the stories really deal with the other areas though so little is known of them.

just a bump for the thread. too cool of a prop to let linger in the lower pages of the forum.
