LOTR Middle Earth Map Showoff Thread!!!

What? No trademark coffee cup stain??.. ;)

On a more serious note, excellent work folks.

Working on mine at the moment.

I am working on my map too. just letting it dry, The only thing I had to use was raspberry tea, I wonder....

Just got my spray bottles and brewed up some strong tea and stronger coffee. :)

I need to buy a plstic tarp to lay it out on in the basement tomorrow and then I'll be off and running.

Just a small update. I mounted the map on a custom backing board. A couple sheets of 3/16" foam board and some black felt.

I plan to build a custom frame over the next week, so I'll post more pics once everything is finished.

This isn't the Middle Earth map, but Thror's map that was shown in FOTR.

As for weathering, I used black coffee, airbrush, watercolor, and sandpaper.

Weathering question:

I started misting my map and the spray bottle is throwing a lot of drops along with the mist. Is everyone else having the same thing happen, and it jsut ends up blending in with the weathering, or should I give it up and try to hunt down a different spray bottle?

And if the latter, is there a kind of spray bottle y'all recommend?

I had the same problem. You can either leave them, or if you think it's too much, just dab them off with a paper towel. I left some, dabbed off others. Too many drops and it will look like it was left out in the rain. But at least it's an easily correctable problem.

Here is my attempt. I hope I didnt go too far with the weathered fold edges. My wife did the one on the left..I did the one on the right.

I started with mists of tea, didnt take, so added some instant coffee. Used a teabag to dab on the darker edges.

I hope the floor isnt stained...

Looks good, Hankey :thumbsup

How are you going to display them?

I think I'll leave them on the floor. ;) J/K

Gonna build a frame with trim from HD corner brackets from the back, and mirror clips attached to the back (thanks for the idea Muttley.). Just need a thin piece of wood to back it..painted black, and big piece of plexiglass.

Think I ill paint the trim gold and weather it to look old.

Of course this is all in the conceptual stage. ;)

Hmmm...sounds familiar. oh yeah, now I remember why

;) :p

Instead of wood as a backing board, go to a craft store and get some 1/4" foam core board. Same rigidity as wood at a fraction of the weight.

I think the folded edges are a little overdone, I'd blend them out into the rest of the map, however if your happy with it thats all that really matters.

I don't think you can really go wrong with the way you age or display your map.

I got some trim from Home Depot and made a basic frame. I didnt get any plexi glass yet tho. The only piece that would have worked was $69...TOO MUCH... Edit: I called a local plastics supplier we deal with at work and I can get a piece of 1/8" plexiglass- 36" x 40" cut to size for $26. PERFECT..

I cut the pieces to size and used fencing corner brackets. Sprayed it with a coat of gold...I will weather it.

If I cant get a piece of glass or plexi that size for a reasonable price I might leave it without. Not sure if they had glass in middle earth. ;)

I got a foam presentattion board at home depot (36" x 48") and cut it down to 36" x 40". It's just sitting together in the pic. If I can't find plexi I can just tape it on from the back. If do I will use the mirror clips I picked up.

Just thought I'd post my progress in case anyone else is interested in doing something similar.

I finished off and hung my frame. I still want to weather it, but I coudn't wait.

I picked up a kid's lamp at Ikea. It's like a torch and flickers. Really adds to the Middle Earth display I have. I have a Strider sword, Sting, Saruman's staff, Gimli Axe, Gollum and now the map.

:)

Re: LOTR Middle Earth Map Showoff Thread!!!

How can I get one of these Middle Earth maps?

A couple of the members here had the full size files that Adam created. If you can get the files from them, you can have kinko's or Staples print them out on their large format printers.
