Modifying a Rubies Mask

Bump

Really need the question answered.. I wanna order this and its a great price. I need to get moving for halloween! Only unsure because it says Adult Predator Three Quarters Vinyl Mask. Three quarters? I dont need the bio mask so I just need the undermask. I plan on foaming and cutting it like the OP did.

The "three-quarters" means that it's not a full mask and doesn't cover your entire head, just three-fourths of it--the back part is open.

It may be mod-able, but it might be hard to attach dreads all the way around.

If you want to see what the 3/4 mask looks like I have one....... I can take a pic of it. It isn't all that great and modding it would be a pain.

Another modification to make:

One serious problem with the Rubies bio is that if you leave it in the heat, like inside a parked car or even if the weather is really hot, it warps and bends very easily and loses its shape.

A good way to prevent that is to line the inside of the mask with a layer or two of paper mache (I use newspaper dipped in watered-down Elmer's Glue). It thickens the bio, toughens it, and prevents it from warping in the heat.

you could also coat the inside with Modge Podge and then bondo it. Worked with the cheap Disguise Iron Man halloween Helmet I picked up cheap a few months back

damn now I have two extremely helpful tutorials I am definetely going to use this!... I was starting to lose hope since i didnt know how the hell i was gonna get a mask with good dreads that was in my budget and i know a place to get good bio masks! This with the Mr. incredible tutorial equals awesome!

Vin,

If your looking to do any modifying of a Rubies mask, don't get the three quarters, go with the Rubies full mask version if your going to go with this company for an undermask. While they are really not the greatest company for making any licensed movie masks or helmets, they can certainly be utilized and modified, especially when trying to do things cheaper. I had got the full Rubies Predator deluxe mask with helmet that the starter of this thread got and modified it also and getting one cheap on Ebay or elsewhere is definitely the way to go if wanting to do things on a budget. Once I got mine, I took out the eyes so I could see better and will probably eventually cut it out further once I get to the finishing touches, but you can certainly do plenty to these masks to make a very decent undermask. Instead of foam on the inside to fill it out to make it fit right, I actually purchased a cheap bicycle helmet and stuck it inside so that It fits perfectly on me when I put it on and can be tightened or adjusted to fit anyone else. Then I removed the crappy four "dreads" that it has and have begun installing actual ones onto it. Just these few minor things have already made a huge difference. As far as the bio, you could try reinforcing it as some of the other posters mentioned, but it really is a cheap plastic and if you can find a better quality one i'd go with that and attach it to the undermask with velcro or magnets.

I considered the bicycle-helmet idea too, but I found that it put the mask too far in front of my face, and I couldn't see a damn thing out of the eyeholes anymore. So instead I packed the back of the mask with foam and squished the front of the mask right up against my face, which allows me to see at least well enough to not usually walk into things.

But the fact remains that with this mask, especially with the bio attached, you're pretty much blind as a bat.

I remember reading somewhere though that KPH, when he was filming P1 with Arnie, also couldn't see at all out of his mask, and so he and Arnie rehearsed all their scenes until Hall could do them with his eyes closed, and then just repeated them while in costume without being able to see anything.

Yes the original mask and bio will make you pretty much blind as a bat just like most masks where the viewing part is no more than a slit. That's why for mine I had cut out the eyes so that the Pred eyes are gone and mine are there making visibility no more issue. You could also go the route that they used for KPH's undermask and what I'm eventually going to do with mine and open it up even more so that more of your face is exposed. If your using a bio than there's no issues and the Rubies mask is just being used as the base undermask. The reason I like the helmet instead of padding it up with foam to fill all the excess space inside the mask is that it keeps most of the areas still open giving much more air space inside the mask so that it does not become nearly as hot as an all foam filled one could be. Your right though Lflank, the mask just the way it comes out of the box is terrible for visibility and that's why if any of you are going to use the Rubies masks for a costume, use it as an undermask and modify it to work for you. You can definitely make it into a very decent piece with a little improvement.

OK.......I am throwing together all the steps I took last year to get a Rubies mask to work for me and my limited budget...at the time. So using a rubies mask, some backer rods, some upholstry foam, magnets, and a bio purchased from e-bay, I basically made an undermask, which looks far far better than the original rubies, which honestly I would never wear without a bio on it, the face is quite sad. It did me until ready to splurge on a much better quality mask. Anyhow, first thing I did was chuck the plastic bio that came with it, and pull out the 4 foam dreds that came on it. You may wish to keep the plastic bio for the time being, if a better bio is not in your budget.

Here is the original Rubies mask....ok for a starter costume...but probably the first piece you should change when you get the bucks!!!!

Now, I ended up making about 40ish dreds out of backer rods, using mostly 1" thick, some 7/8", and some 3/4"...whatever I could get my hands on. I cut mine at 2 ft lengths (some slightly shorter), you can do less or more, totally up to you. Try to use somewhat shorter and thinner ones up by the front sides, and use the longer thicker ones for the back. Once cut, I tapered the ends simply using scissors, cutting the ends from the tip upwards, to try to make as good of a tapered end as possible. Then I slightly melted the ends with a heat gun, which smooths it out considerably. Carefull not to melt it too much!

Again since I was on a budget, I used copper pipe for my dred beads, you can use whatever. I originally put 2 pieces per dred..but lesson learned, all that copper weighed a ton! The mask was crazy heavy...so I had to take some off. Keep that in mind! I put the pipe pieces on the dreds, covered them in masking tape, and sprayed the dreds with black plasti dip. I tried many different types of paints before I could finally find the plasti dip, and none worked....they all cracked and peeled off. Was a big waste of time and money! Do yourself a favour, and use plasti dip the first time!

Now, to attach the dreds. Twas very simple actually! Simply make some small cuts in the areas you wish to attach the dreds (MAKE SURE THE CUTS ARE SMALLER THAN THE BACKER RODS, OTHERWSIE THEY WILL FALL OUT!) I found that by making a small 'X' instead of an actual hole worked best, and was a nice tight fit. No need for glue or anything to hold the dreds in..simply stuff it in the hole!!!! Makes it easy to take them out and adjust if need be.

I started off with holes, but found that an 'x' cut was better...

Start stuffing the dreds!!! Good thing is you can always add more holes where needed....but dont make too many cuts too close together, otherwise the mask may rip with all the dreds in it.

Mmmk, so the dreds are all in now. I might suggest also painting the back of the mask black with plasti dip..you know, the part of the mask with the fake dreds and fake painted dred beads. I didnt do that , but was really thinkin about it! You could be done at this point, if you are sticking with the plastic bio. If so...I would really suggest removing the elastic that holds it on, and use some magnets instead. Every little bit helps to remove some of the cheesiness from this mask!!!! I opted for a new bio. This new bio weighs far far more than the plastic one..so I had to use a whack of magnets to hold it on. SOmewhere around 24- 8lb magnets!!!!! Yup, crazy but true. The plastic bio would probably only need around 4-6. Magnets glued to the underside of the bio...

IMG_0424.jpg

Once this was done, I put the bio on the mask, and from the inside of the mask, placed the remaingin magnets so they were attracted to the ones on the bio. Then glued them in place...

Bio holds on pretty good now. My new Celtic bio is much lighter than my P1 bio...so it wont take as many magnets either. Velcro is a good idea if you are planning on having a faceless mask, with bio always on.

So now I had new dreds, a new bio. Looked cool!! Except when I tried it all on my head, I could not get the eyes in the mask to line up with the eyes of the bio..no matter what. I cut pieces of upholstry foam and glued it to the inside of the mask to make it fit more snug. Helped big time...but still couldnt see **** out of the mask with the bio on. My only option was to cut the face off the mask. Which was no real big deal, since I never was going to wear the rubies mask without a bio...its too ugly for my tastes. So here it is, no face!

I can see!!!! Can also breathe much better, not as hot.

Finished product with P1 bio....

and with this years Celtic bio (not done painting it yet!!!)

SO there you have it. It can be somewhat flexible as an undermask on the cheap. For me, its only temporary...its still a rubies..nowhere near as nice as the masks on the lair. But its good for starters or those that dont wanna spend a load of coin. Hope this is of use to all you out there with a rubies! Good luck...and feel free to send me any questions.

do you think this could work for Caseys Wolf bio?

Thanks man ;)

woot just ordered all of this stuff the mask and the bio from P1 I can get the backer rods for free!
Does anyone know if this mask already has foam in it to hold it up?

does anyone know what bio helmets will fit this if you make a halfmask out of it? preferably celtic or gort bios. and where could i find one.

Thank you Keefer
Yes i am a newbie but i have the passion to make a predator suit.
I too am on a limited budget (times are tough)

I have a rubies deluxe on the way to my house as I type this, and will share picks from start to finish with the modifications as they happen. I am currently working on the cannon from scratch (pictures coming) with animatronics.

I love this forum, and it is good to see the passion for a franchise that was so kick ass!!!

Keefer what did you use for the eye wear piece (reflective two way mirror film) on that new bio?

I used tint film, got it in the automotive department at walmart....they sell it in strips, peel and stick...worked out well!!!!

I cut out a piece of plastic using something like this.....

ca16445_1_enl.jpg

and stuck the film on it...as the film by itself was too flimsy to use
