Movies in costume? Oh, and the NFL...

Costume Policy:AMC does not permit weapons or items that would make other guests feel uncomfortable or detract from the movie-going experience. Guests are welcome to come dressed in costume, but we do not permit masks or face paint. In short, bring your lightsaber, turn it off during the movie, and leave the blaster and Darth Vader mask at home.

So, I am taking my 7 yo niece to SW TFA tomorrow dressed as Han Solo and she will be Rey. Just an observation, tomorrow is the NFL championship games. Everyone will be in costume, they will all have matching uniforms (jerseys). Some will paint their face. Some will go all out and look ridiculous but this is celebrated. Why is that more socially acceptable?

You can't bring guns into NFL stadiums, either.

Their policy is perfectly reasonable and respectable. They don't want anything that looks like a gun, and they don't want anything that will block the security cameras' view of your face. Just Thursday night, there was a shooting at a local theater here (victim is in the hospital, was shot through the seat, assailant claims that the gun fell from their pocket and discharged).

I don't care if you have a concealed weapons permit. Weapons have no place in a theater. They're compromising by letting you bring in lightsabers, as long as they're not used during the movie, and those are still bulky and have no reason to be in the theater.

Yes, it's fun to dress up to go to a movie (though I wouldn't do it outside of opening day). But not when you're going to make others uncomfortable.

Besides, if movies have taught me anything it's that if you try to belittle jocks it's only a matter of time before someone stands on a cafeteria table and makes a speech about us all getting along.

Then someone starts the slow clap.

Best to leave it alone.

(In seriousness, I'm always ok with costumes, ESPECIALLY when parent is encouraging kid fantasy. But it's understandable why movie theaters are nervous about guns or even things that look like guns. Also movie theaters aren't usually as steep as stadiums, even when they call it stadium seating. so big hats can get in the way).

This topic has been brought up before, jerseys and facepaint is quite different than a StormTrooper or Han Solo, but I am sure you already know that and are just venting

Exactly right. People go to the movie theater to watch a movie in a peaceful, quiet auditorium. They don't go there to hand out candy to raucous little trick-or-treaters in costume, wielding plastic guns and swinging light sabers! C'mon, get real!

theaters mostly just need to police and cover their butts if anything happens.

You probably should look for another theater that actually allows it, if you MUST dress up.
I would be mad also if this were to happen with a movie I'd like to dress up at.

Maybe go to a Football game dress as your favorite SW characters?

I wouldn't even feel safe at a Raider game, imagine how a normal moviegoer would feel if he/she were surrounded by people in masks and fake yet intimidating-looking weapons?

I'm pretty sure if some idiot wearing a motorcycle helmet decided to go on a shooting spree at an NFL game there would be a moratorium on wearing bike helmets to sporting events. If there's a realistic chance that someone might be unsettled by a fan wearing this they will preemptively ban it.

No one should feel safe at a Raider game. I hope the rancid Raiders never set foot in Los Angeles ever again!

That is what convention's are for . you pay to watch a movie at a theater. You pay to see costumes at the Con's . who cares about football ? It took Will Smith making a movie about it to tell the world that banging your head constantly might not be a good idea. And apparently that is a controversial idea .lol

Millions of people care about football, even if you do not! And boxing, and hockey, and distance running and weight lifting, and a hundred other contact and non-contact sports that challenge and punish the body and the will. Every single sport that requires excellence has its perils and sacrifices! It's a choice athletes make and they make it knowingly, and those who are the best make it gladly. Serving in the armed forces is also perilous. Fortunately, we in the Free United States of America have a volunteer military; the best in the world. People choose the peril for their own reasons. You are no better or smarter for not choosing what they choose. In fact, you (and I) are less. Ultimately, they own the glory! You do not get to smugly judge and ridicule them for their love of what they do, and the price they pay.

That is exactly my point we already knew that . we did not need a " controversial " movie telling us it is dangerous . and we go to movies and expect quiet, We go to Con's and expect costumes and we go to football games and expect loud crazy fans so who cares what you wear it is not gonna distract anything .

I should have been more specific and said who cares what you wear to football I guess.

My only complaint about football is if the refs would lay off there whistle a game just might break out.

I was trying to be sarcastic about the movie but I failed.

but now I wish I was smugly judging because you say we live in a free America followed by I can't smugly judge and ridicule .
