Re: My Prop Replica Collection - New Arrival - BTTF & why I will never buy a Nike McF
First of all, let me put this into context with three facts. It's a little hard to explain what I am feeling at this very moment, so please have patience with me.
1 - I have been eyeing Markpoon's Nike McFlys for ages and ages, as well as Pitbull's marvellous conversions.
However, for some reason or another I still cannot fully comprehend, I never took the plunge.
2 - As you have noticed from many of the items I have in my collection, I add what catches my eye. It can be half the size of the original prop, be off in the details as much as it wants to, etc. As I have the habit of saying, so long as something screams out to me, I'm happy. I'm in this for the fun
3 - I live thousands of miles away from where 99.9% of props (and their subsequent replicas), originate from. Collectors on this rock are non-existant. The closest to any kind of *con* I can ever hope to go to is, well, come to think of it, there is nothing close at all.
Having said that, life has a funny way of evolving and giving you a massive chins up every once in a while
When Nike came out with the launch of their new McFlys a few days ago, I had already bought a pair of McFlys from Brad (Jedifyfe).
My first thought when I heard of the new Nikes was "cool, but no thanks", even if they were within my price bracket (which they aren't).
And here's why.
The pair of McFlys I got from Brad have something Nike's shoes don't : Character.
To me, that supercedes ANY officiality / accuracy / coolness etc etc etc that the Nike McFlys have.
To start off with, these shoes are the result of years of anticipation by alot of fans, including many here on the RPF.
They flew from Singapore, from where Markpoon was the first person to ever make these available, right into Brad's hands.
From there, Brad modified these to include working lights on the heels, using nothing but a hobby knife, some LEDS and a soldering iron, as well as giving the soles a paint job overhaul.
As if that were not enough, these shoes actually 'sat' in a real Delorian replica, and then went into the hands of Christopher Lloyd, who autographed them in a very inconspicuous place on the inner side, thus not 'ruining' the look of the shoes with some scribble across the outside.
As far as I am aware, these are the only pair of McFlys to ever be signed by Christopher Lloyd.
Now, if that is not character, I don't know what is. Made by fans, for fans.
All I can say is that when these arrived this morning, I really had to hold the tears of joy back.
Sure, all this can be achieved by many people in the US. But I'm here, not there.
And that is why I will never buy one of those new McFlys, even if they go down in price to within my range.
I am happy with these, and will not change or compare them for and to anything.
OK, enough ranting and expressions of joy, but I really wanted to share what has been going through my mind
Some may think I'm nuts because of the way I reason, but hey, that me. I hope to have at least managed to explain myself a teeny weenie bit, and just wanted to share this with you guys.
I am happy with what I have
Brad, thanks man, you're the only person who ALMOST made me cry like in the past 2 decades :lol
