National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD! FINISHED!!!

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

I started working on mine again last night.
I got some nickel-plating solution in a few days ago, and started nickel-plating all the brass parts to match the JWB derringer. So far, it's looking awesome. I should have some pics to post as soon as I cut out all the German Silver inlays to be set into the wood stock.

Looking forward to this! I've been struggling with the geometry of the 1 1/4" hammer that you recommended, but _may_ be close to a solution. (Hint: the nipple is _way_ off.)

BTW, do you have a good source for German silver sheet? I've found some promising sources on eBay, but wondered if you knew of some better source.

I know it could be a while before you finish this project, but I am really looking forward to that day!! Thanks for the update and photos! :thumbsup

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

Thanks!

I also ended up buying another 'Lock & Hammer' for this pistol. It's exactly the same one that came with the kit, but needed another, since I fabricated it to fit the Booth-accurate hammer. I wanted to be able to take it to the range and fire it a few times, which I wouldn't be able to do with the Booth-accurate hammer. The Booth-accurate hammer doesn't come down onto the cap right and will not fire the gun, since it's smaller than the hammer that came with the kit.

UPDATE:

I'll have more progress pics up this week, showing the installation of the German Silver inlays into the wood stock and brass target sight & brass strip inlays set into the gun barrel.

I also noticed that the silver inlay on the butt of the wood stock has a little hatch on the that stores an extra bullet, which I'll be working on this week, and will show the following week.

RelicMaker:

This is outstanding work, particularly in the cutting of the inlays. I'm currently struggling with the alignment of the shorter hammer, which necessitates a backward and downward positioning of the barrel -- unless you can suggest an alternate solution.

And German silver is on the way.

Regardless of current status, we're all getting a lot of fun out of this. I hope to present some news from here shortly.

Or I won't, as I've chewed up a lot of wood lately, and will probably ruin other stuff. :)

As for the hammer.... If you plan on taking it to the firing range, I would keep it with the original hammer. If you are just going to display it, then the Booth-accurate hammer will be the way to go. Just cock the hammer back into its first position, so you can't see how misaligned it is.

Thanks! I look forward to seeing your progress! :cool:thumbsup

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

UPDATE:

Finished up work on the Barrel to accurately match the 'Booth Derringer':

- Carved channel into the front of the barrel to install the brass Sight.
- Carved two channels into the barrel for the two brass inlays.
- Added steel Rear Sights to the rear of the barrel.
- Carved Blast Grooves into the opening of the barrel.
- Engraved Designs into the barrel.

Also finished up engraving the 'Trigger Guard', and a couple of the German Silver Inlays.

I just have to finish up the Butt Stock Inlay, which contains two Hatches that contain the extra 'Bullet' and 'Cap'.

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

Looks like you are doing an amazing job!!! Will you be looking to taper in each side of the rear flat part of the barrel that fits into the stock of the gun like the original?

Thanks guys!!! :D

GeordieIndy, The wood gunstock was already pre-carved out for the barrel and also for the rear part you're talking about. So, I can't taper it like the original without there being gaps in the wood. I was thinking of welding on some extra metal to add the taper end and then carving out more wood to fit it, but I'm worried about really screwing up that part if I do that.
So, I'm leaving it like it is....

This will not be as accurate as I would like it to be, since it's not even the same size Derringer as the Booth Derringer, but I am going to make it as close to the original gun as when Booth bought it when it was new. That means, I'm also not going to add the damage and missing parts that the Booth Derringer currently has...

I'm really enjoying this kit-build and will most likely buy another kit of a different gun in the future!:cool:thumbsup

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

Thanks for the info, totally accurate or not, it's still looking incredible!! :thumbsup

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

UPDATE:

I've finished completing all of the nickel silver inlays, with this last one being the most complex. This inlay has two hatch openings to hold an extra bullet and an extra cap in the butt of the handle of the stock.
Also, I've completed the checkering of the wood which you can see in the last photo. You'll notice there is more checkering compared to the original gun, which is because my gun is a little bigger in size.
I should have this all completed and assembled by next week! :)
