Need help IDing a knife!

Jason, I don't think we are talking about the same thing

When I said The bottom edge of the blade converges toward the point instead of running parallel to it I was talking bout the area shown below with the blue and red lines.

The red line is the original edge and the blue line is the way the prop is.

Now that you mentioned that the prop knives are rubber that explains a lot.

I believe the prop maker filled in the notches and the hole so it would be easier to cast and then recreated them on the cast rubber knives.

PS : I could not pull up any auctions complete or new that have a knife similar to the one you bought, can you post the url to the auction, you should be able to pull it from your feedback profile.

Looks thin. I've seen that kind of wrap before. I'm just not sure where.

Edit- It reminds me of the stuff they use to bind decorative leather wallets. That stuff's a lot narrower but the shine and thickness seem about right.

I'm glad some of you found one. :)

As for the rap, it puts me in mind of the leather rap handle of a Klingon Mek'leth. (or how every you spell that big knife thing worf had in "First Contact") Maybe we should ask our trek friends.

Jason, looks like you nailed it, great job, appears only the notches are a little off but could be explained by the rubber casting... Possibly having to recreate them on the stunt by choice or mistake.

Here is yours overlayed onto the stunt.

:) If you all want to redo all of the notches to get it right that's great.

If you want to just add one, like I did, it's really easy. There's a Dremel grinding weal, that's the exact thickness of the other notches already in the knife. I just put that in my 10 speed dremel, cranked it up, and in like a second I had a grove. The only to warnings I would give is 1) watch out for sparks. 2) It cuts fast so be careful (it cut so fast for me, I actually cut a little to far, and had to fill it back in just a little bit, but you can't really tell. :) )

I thought at first the handle was some kind of bone, but it looks more wooden with the rings at the bottom of the handle. The blade pattern looks unique as well, so I've just been looking at various knife catalogs and websites for it. Any more information about it would help me out.

Ah, the jayne's town knife. It's a beauty. Unfortunately, if you find anything close to accurate, you'll pay an arm, and a leg for it. :)

Back in the old days some people made there knives out of steel Rasps, and files, because they could trust that the steel was strong, and reliable. They would painstakingly grind out the shape of the knife, from the existing shape of rasp, or file. The patter on the Jayne's town knife, suggests that it's one of the rasp style knives. If it is a real one, then it is for the most part unique. (in that you will not find one ground in the exact same way, or with the exact same handle) Not to mention the few people out there that still make these kind of knives, charge a lot.

I guess, If you have a really good grinder, and a really big rasp, you could try grinding your own. (If you don't mind a lot of sparks, and possibly loosing a finger or two. LOL )

On the other hand, you could start looking at knife catalogs for blades, and kits, for making you own knives. Buy a blade with a similar shape, make you own handle, and paint on the rasp pattern.

An update to the Jaynestown knife. I haven't found a close match yet, but the knife did pop up elsewhere. Another show canceled by Fox, Arrested DEvelopment. This knife was from Season One, so it popped up again during the production of Firefly.

Nice find. Maybe it's some kind of imitation of a higher priced knife. You know, a mass produced version of one of those high end rasp knives. BudK, and other places like them, have knives like that, but I still haven't found a match yet.

Jason.
