Original Storm Trooper Helmet? It's back!!!

Re: Original Storm Trooper Helmet?

It'll be back.

The lets dump the Don Post helmet on Ebay as an original has been happening for a long time. Used to be one in the states doing it too that crudely, and I mean CRUDELY inscribed a 20th Century Fox on the bottom to prove it was genuine.

Well, at least his old hairpiece is fetching a good price. And that's unquestionably screen used.

Not quite...they seriously came from the manufacturer like that at one point a long, long time ago. The "20th Century Fox" stamp, if you could call it that, looked like chicken scratch or a 4yo's hand writing. Many were sold via mail offers and at the Disney parks with the crudely molded inscription. It was crude, but at least it was consistent.

...wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of left-over stock was tossed out of the old MGM/Uni theme park a long time ago. About halfway down the page, Jez shows an ad for one here. Some had lenses (that would have fallen out if the helmet flexed or the glue aged. Some had molded eyes painted black with numerous holes for vision. They were flexible vinyl with stickers for graphics.

That listing is pretty ambiguous as to what it is. I stand by my earlier comment and hope people bidding on it will look at the pictures and do their research.

I think he's hoping he will get a few people believing it is from the film so the price increases. I like the way he gas "experts" displayed.

Yeah, I saw the experts thing, we were only trying to help. It's going for much more than I thought it would though, especially for 4 hours in!

They came from the factory that way?! :lol Good lord I never noticed before on the old ones I've seen at flea markets and old old tyme costume shops I'll have to look next time. I just always assumed it was a bad job done to make it look real.

He added this line:
"If you are a Star Wars fan/collector you will know that the original helmets were made in the UK and this helmet, therefore, must be an early Don Post creation. It has a blurred stamp inside and the 20th Century copyright mark is stamped into the rear. It's very strong, has slightly yellowed over the years but has no cracks"

If he's going to state in the auction that it's a Don Post, then caveat emptor. Buyer beware, really.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not familiar with which helmet is which, that is why I joined this forum to learn, but this guy, even with my untrained eye does seem to contradict himself..

Ah Paul Daniels you were my hero growing up...

I had to double check this in case it was some kind of reality prank!

How the mighty have fallen, quite sad in some respects.

It looks to be the quite hard to find very first issue Don Post Stormtrooper Helmet. The first issues had smoked lenses and were harder in construction (not so flexible). I have one in my star wars memorabilia collection, If I get time I'll post an image tomorrow. The first version was apparently, as the story goes, quickly withdrawn/updated as some people were wearing them as motorcycle crash helmets, I kid you not.

I would have thought a mint first issue Don Post has perhaps a £250 market value.

Strange bidding going on. One bidder bid against himself four times, going from 30 to 200 pounds in one minute.

ETA: number of bids

Nah, you can put a high bid in but it only shoots up if someone puts a higher bid in. Can be a sign of shill bidding, or just the fella after him put a high bid in as well, not expecting it to shoot up.

I thought the first ones had the drilled holes in the eyes.

just sent him this:

hey, i just wanted to let you know that this is deffinatly an early don post helmet and NOT a screen used helmet. and i also know that youve already been contacted about this once by other people and you took it off. whoever you talked to to "confirm" that this is authentic were deffinatly wrong. heres a link to a site that shows actual screen used and production made helmets: Original Stormtrooper Helmets and Armor Sub Menu
i can obviusly tell that this is a don post but trying to exploit people that dont know any better is wrong and you should either take down the listing for good this time or rename it and expalin what it is. i have no doubt that the story of how you got it it true, but that dosent make it an origional.

i hope it didnt seem too mean. hopefuly he will take it down or change it.

Nope. The first ones had lenses. The eyes with holes versions didn't come out until the early 90's.

That rough 20th Century Fox mark confused a lot of people.
I remember seeing one at a costume shop in 1992 and they were trying to tell me it was real. I knew it wasn't, but I was interested because it was the older style DP with lenses and hard shell (new ones in stores were soft and had the holes).

Edit - Eye hole version was released in 1988.
