Preview of MR's new ESB Boba Fett Helmet

The helmet is accurate as far as size. It has been compared to my casting of the pp2 helmet. Here 's a pic of it(with old paintjob before stripping) next to a helmet I own cast from an original. Mine appears wider that is only because of the ear pieces. Also this is a progress photo I took when taking the MR helmet apart to begin the remaster on the paintjob. I realize some fans may not care about the scratch being incorrect but after working on this piece and knowing Fett stuff the way I do it's frustrating to get it all right except one scratch. I also had the white smudge on it too was bummed to see that go too.

VERY NICE to hear that MR is making future items of this quality.

But i do have a question.. Those photos of the two helmets..
They are different. They are not the same... The one is more bulgy and O-shape while the other one is more smoth and 0-shape.

Is one of them original?

The one on the left is from an original helmet but is also closer to the camera and not taken with a 50mm lens which could cause lens distortion. Actually the real one is lumpy and bumpy, so the MR is acutally smoother than the real deal. They are very close to each other and if I get time I'll pop a back to back photo.

Boy, I hope that this turns out well. It sure looks great now. But after the Fett rifle paint application, I think I'm going to wait and see if some are available after release. By then we should be seeing how well the factory did.

Well I hope that Jez and Braks don't mind my comparison with their photos.

The angles are a bit off but it should give you a rough idea of the shape and paintjob relations between the MR (left) and PP3 (right)

You can clearly see they almost completely ignored Lee's paint master and used their reference photos from the PP3 paintjob.

I think the paintjob is fantastic! Its a shame it's not more screen used ESB, but its a very close replication of the PP3 and the shape is great.

Man, I hope they move the position of the silver "blob" which is currently too far away from the "< >" shape on the front of the forehead. It should be much closer to those recessed "< >" shapes. :unsure

I'm kinda disappointed with MR's paint job on this helmet. It looks as though they could have nailed it!...If only they referenced the correct bucket...

Well don't let it sway you folks. Considering the price etc. it's a steal regardless..if anyone has a photo of the old Don Post Deluxe for over $600 post up a comp it'll really bring it to reality the quality of work they did with this.

Good point:thumbsup

People have been far too critical about this helmet. My post was not meant to show how far it was, but to show how close it was.

It is a shame the paintjob isnt closer to the actual ESB. But it is a really incredible paintjob for a mass produced item.

It is a really incredible collectors piece! The best Boba piece to date without a doubt.

How close can you get before the the paint job gives itself away?
I mean like mine is only at about half a meter before the jigs up
so to speak

I think the paintjob is stunning if this is truly representative of the final product. Definitely in a whole different league compared to the disaster that was the Don Post Deluxe!

I was just saying that they need to take care to make sure the main areas of weathering are positioned correctly. Everything else is so close to PP3 - it seems a shame to screw it up at the last minute with some sloppy placement of weathering.

I wonder why they decided to go with the PP3 paintjob instead of Lee's meticulous paintjob based on the screen used version???

Chris

I agree Davy Jones. I think/hope folks are as pleasantly surprised as I was when I saw it.

I saw this at ComicCon, which is why I am ordering it. :)

It is an incredibly well built helmet, though it does need a little extra weathering. When I figured out the amount of work and time to get a piece to this state the $450 was a no-brainer for me. I think it probably the most reasonably priced MR helmet released given what goes into each one.

Sorry for going on about this but I'd really love to hear an answer from MR regarding the choice of paintjob that they ultimately chose. I'm pretty sure that the paint master was done to match the screen used ESB "hero" which I've added to the left hand side of the comparison photo. How did the factory paintjob end up being the PP3 instead???

I for one like the fact that they painted it as the PP3. Makes it a more accurate replica.

Besides the example of the screen used hero posted isn't even ESB screen accurate anymore.

The PP3 wasn't used on screen so the MR version is actually not an accurate replica of the screen used helmet at all.

The paint master was painted to match the ESB "hero" helmet as it appeared back in 1979. For some reason, MR decided to do the PP3 paintjob instead.

Their product description is misleading because it makes you think that you're getting a replica of the SCREEN USED helmet when in actual fact, that is not the case at all.

I'm still going to get this because I think it looks great - it's just such a shame that they didn't stick to their original plan of reproducing the screen used helmet - they obviously nailed the paint technique so it's sad to think that they could have applied that technique to a screen used paintjob replica.
