Robocop Statue in Detroit

We should probably just build a statue of Kawame.

DON'T BE HATIN' ON DETROIT'S HIP-HOP MAYOR!

Here comes Kwame
Like a black Tsunami
The mayor who's
a big time player

:lol:lol:lol:lol

Seriously though, there are many places that I'd rather live in than Detroit...but no place that I'd rather be from.

At least Gran Torino was actually shot here. Robocop was a fun movie and all and I like it but it did nothing for Detroit rather than capitalize on its troubled image.

This Superbowl commercial did more for Detroit than Robocop ever did:

Wasn't Robocop filmed in Texas?

Yeah, with the exception of a few second unit location shots. Gran Torino , however, was shot in Detroit.

In the plot/story of the movie Robocop, OCP took over the police contract in Detroit

Wow, I like that there is a countable number of other members from Detroit. (or at least close to it)

I vote Robocop Statue all the way :thumbsup

So they want to commemorate a film that was mostly not shot there, and which depicted the town as a corrupt, run down, crime-ridden hell hole.

'kay...

Well, it is a corrupt, run down, crime-ridden hell hole. With casinos!
I guess that when Robocop was made it was shot during the beginning of the Big Three's - and Detroit's - decline. At that time, no one could imagine how bad it would get.

This reminds me of the Rocky Balboa statue that was in Philly for a while.

Except... well, Rocky had more than one good film. :lol

One of the worst ideas ever. Robocop was an overglorified violent movie and has no place having a statue displayed in a city .

We used to have Laura Linney's uniform from Mothman on display in town.

This is a good long way off from being THAT bad of an idea.

Right near The Central Depot? That's real great put a 50,000 dollar statue right next to a decaying building that they tried to demolish years ago

Detroit has the same problems as any major city and saying any place is a war zone shows that they've seen and believed too many movies. And anyone that can't see the sense of humor and sense of hope that people in Detroit have is missing the point. It's frigging Robocop! I'm just disappointed in the $50k price tag for that much it should have a piece of Peter Weller in it.

I love that the primary donor is a company called Omni Consumer Products.

It's a cool idea and I'm glad it's happening. It's a dumb idea for the city's tax dollars, but fine for a private commission. It would be nicer if they found a better spot. The train station is a cool building and there's some good stuff like Slow's Barbeque right there, but it's not a real high traffic area (foot traffic anyway).
Maybe they can put it at Borders near Campus Martius - that spot might be empty soon.

Don't mess with OCP!!!:love

I'm very happy it is not locally or fed. funded. There is little foot traffic anywhere in Detroit, other than Greektown or near the ball parks. Maybe they could take RoboDonations towards restoring the train station.
