Sculpting a Galaxy : review

What I meant was, in the book is Lorne credited with most of the photos? If they are taken against backdrops maybe not. I just read he had tons of photos. I thought he would use them in the book. Maybe the build up photos could be his. The finished ones are probably taken by LFL.

The slide show stuff on the DVD was taken by Lorne and other ILM crew people. Over the years, the stuff got pooled together and archived at ILM/Lucasfilm.

The shots in the book (for the most part) are the really nice photos that were taken against black or white backdrops after the models were done. It doesn't appear that they went in and re-photographed any of the models.

Has anyone taken a look at the "limited" edition with the mini landspeeder and deathstar surface parts?

Yes - I saw it and it's cool, but too expensive for me.

The pieces look like toys, but are well put together. I'm sure they are exact replicas of what was used in the film, but just not real impressive.

I would love to see the DVD.

It comes in a nice presentation case, but there are just so many other items I want.

Got mine and love it. I got the Super-Duper-Edition with all the toys. The book has extra content that isn't found in the local bookstore edition. There are foldouts and nice extras in there. I was pleased with most all the pics inside my book and was utterly blown away that 80+ percent of the book is OT goodies. The toys are all nicely put together. I was very pleased with the paint job on the death star pieces in particular. Really like the Landspeeder even without the figures. The figs are my least favorite, but most likely as detailed as the original miniatures.

The DVD is true eye candy. There are several mini-docs within the DVD and for us SW History Buffs..........there were plenty of cool stories and previously unheard facts concerning our favorite film. I got the $395 edition but only paid $129 and it came with the same Sideshow $50 GC.

I couldn't believe the price, but the place I got it thru was an affiliate of Amazon.com and they have upped the price to $349 now. Yes it's the best bargain I've ever personally gotten on Amazon.com.

The case of the book is extremely pretty to look at. The miniature falcon panel on the cover is nice as well. It was painted quite professionally. The extra book of CGI models was a pleasing sight also. All in all, the book was worth $395 or I wouldn't have tried to get it in the first place. Of course at $79........its even better.

Here's what you get on the DVD -

3 Web documentaries on the miniatures from the Prequels. Not all of them were on the Prequel DVD bonus features, so they might be new-ish.

There is also a series of narrated slide shows on the making of STAR WARS, the formation of ILM, etc. That's the stuff we RPF'ers are really interested in. Lorne gets technical on some of the model making techniques as well as the filming.

There are a bunch of shots that I've never seen before of the:
Star Destroyer
Rebel Blockade Runner
Sandcrawler (and a bunch of shots of them filming it.)
X-wings
Some stuff on the Y-wings (not much) and the TIE fighters (also not much.)
The Falcon is well represented.
Lots of shots of the Death Star trench setup out in the parking lot.

I'd say that there is something like 500+ slides on there, but about 1/2 to 2/3 are model interest shots (the rest are about the people that worked here and life at ILM.)

I'd say the running time of the slide shows is about an hour.

Ughh - are you saying the book that comes with the super duper kit is different than the book we all have??

Yes indeed. There is added content to the Super Book that is not found on the shelf. Pull outs, fold outs etc......And of course the signature page inside. I'm not saying it's so much better that it justifies the difference in price........I just think all the extra stuff together justifies it for me.

I just got the "limited" edition and it's really put together nicely. I'm digging the extras, like the little models. I'm gonna watch the dvd this weekend.

I have the super duper edition and I was mesmerized for about 2 hours with it. I would have loved to have had this thing 20 years ago when I was doing a LOT of model building and prop creation.

Lorne Peterson's anecdotes of the original ILM, especially the one about the makeshift slip and slide incident and the Fox studio executives ill timed visit really cracked me up.

How many pages of this thing actually have good shots of some of the studio scale models, or pictures of the build ups. THat's what i originally thought this book was supposed to be, but i hear mixed reviews
