SpiderSparrow's TASM Build (Suit Finished!!! Skateboard Pics! 11/1/12)

Re: SpiderSparrow's TASM Build (I need puff paint advice. Page 4)

Thanks, El Fett!

This suit is looking great!! A lot of dedicated hard work, that's for sure!!

I don't know if this would work, but if you have some extra fabric to experiment with, try stretching it to the max it needs to go then applying the puffy paint while it is stretched--probably in a thinner line than it needs to be if it were not stretched--see what happens when the paint is dry and you release the stretch....don't know how the puff paint will react condensed. It might just all ball up, but it might work?!

Shylaah

Thanks! I have a feeling it will just wrinkle up when the stretch is released, but I do have a scrap piece of grey lycra from a top hat I made a long time ago, so I'll give it a shot!

Yeah, it's a tricky situation.....might end up having to put a short invisible zipper in the back of the head or something, especially since you said were eventually glad the mask was unattached and you liked being able to remove it. Any solution to stretching the puffy paint might not hold up under continued use!?

Yeah, I thought about a zipper, but I don't really have a clue about how to sew one on, and I don't think I have enough fabric in the hood to attach a zipper, the hood is a little too tight as it is.

What I'll probably end up doing is just not puff painting the lines going around the neck, I don't think it would be very noticeable. Plus I'm tucking some of the neck into the collar of the suit, and it will have puff paint.

Man how did you get the lense curve from your sculpy frames?

Ive been using it and its quite limp, if I pop it in the oven itll obviously harden flat.

Also did you use anything to help shape it?

Re: SpiderSparrow's TASM Build (I need puff paint advice. Page 4)

From my experience so long as you paint the webs on when the Lycra is stretched to the size it would be when it's on your neck it will keep its shape. Good idea to paint it thinly though.
That being said your material is different from mine so may behave differently but I think you'll be ok.

I actually cooked them in the oven flat and let them harden flat. But the thing about sculpy is it never really completely hardens, even after it's cooked it still has a bit of flex to it. So the key to using sculpy for lense frames is to use metal lenses. I just shaped the metal mesh lenses how I wanted them and then superglued the frames to them, the frames very easily curved around the lenses. And the metal mesh holds them in that shape. even after you glue the frames on you can still bend them slightly to get them to shape around your head perfectly.

Ok, cool! Thanks for your input! :)

Holy...
That is... well... Amazing! :p The way you made the lenses was just genius, and the polygon pattern was also quite impressive! When I watched the movie, I doubted Parker could make the costume, but now I think it's possible!
By the way, where did you get the Zentai Suit?

Thanks man! Mine is not quite up to par with Parker's, and I did cheat and start with a premade suit, haha. But there are some much more talented guys on these boards who have made replicas from scratch.

I got the suit here:

Ok I'm not going to lie I saw the way you did your eyes and now I wanna make some comic style spidey eyes, any tips? I got all the material I saw you posted just don't know where to start I'm not very creative haha

Through experimenting I actually see what you mean.

How did you shape them? Your shape seems very accurate, was it just free hand or did you use a mould or guide?

To start I just drew out my lense shape on paper and cut it out, that way you can just flip the paper over and use it as a guide for sculpting both frames, this will ensure that both your frames are the same shape and size, just mirrored of course.
When your sculpting, your not going to get them perfect, but just do the best you can and then after you harden them you can touch them up with fine sand paper.

Not sure if you're talking about the curve of them or the actuall shape of the frames. But I just free handed both until it looked accurate.

Hi, I'm still kinda new here, but not new to costuming. I'm finally starting my Amazing Spider-Man suit and I will post all my progress in this thread. :)

This step by step was perfect for newb costumers like me. Thanks!

Re: SpiderSparrow's TASM Build (I need puff paint advice. Page 4)

Well, I caught a stomach virus... So I lost a few days of work on the suit. :unsure
But I'm feeling better and started back at it today. Finished all the red honeycomb and I've started the puff painting. I'm going to put the blue/black honeycomb on hold for now to make sure I get the puff paint done in time.

I've done the mask and the chest spider so far. The mask went pretty quick, but the chest spider took forever!

Here's the mask! I didn't puff paint the horizontal lines around the neck since that area has to stretch so much, but I'm going to color them in nice and dark with a black sharpie, and then it shouldn't be noticeable. The mask will look better on my head, I just have to leave it on my mannequin head until it dries.
Oh, and the honeycomb shows up way better in person... It's just the light and picture quality that makes it rather invisible, haha.

And here's the spider. The spider on this suit isn't very accurate, but I made some modifications to make it look a little better. And once the puff paint dries I'll paint the fabrics underneath the middle part of the spider in the gaps red.
It's not accurate, but I did the best I could with what I had to work with.
And the suit in no way looks orange in person... Once again, horrible lighting.

Might try this myself. Simply amazing (no pun intended)

Re: SpiderSparrow's TASM Build (I need puff paint advice. Page 4)

I have the very same suit apparently when I asked they only sell with detachable masks now? I also ordered an all in 1?

Re: SpiderSparrow's TASM Build (I need puff paint advice. Page 4)

I love your honeycomb idea think I will try and replicate it to mine ;)
