It's only been two episodes but so far I'm just not feeling this series of Picard, which is a shame as I was hoping we would get a true return to form.
It has too many things that are just a bit off that keep taking me out of the episode whilst I watch it, it makes me question the behind the scenes decisions more and more which then takes me completely out of the narrative.
I know Picard was greenlit before the ink fully dried on CBS merger so maybe that accounts for things like the classic sound effects sounding off, like the DS9 hail sound mixed in the Dahj's replicator menu, Picard's commbadge sounding nothing like the sound from the TNG films/Voyager when it was last heard, it now sounds like it has the quasi TOS-DISCO comm chirp sound blended in. Of the one episode of Discovery I saw I noticed the same thing, other Trek series sound effects mixed in to try and make it feel like Star Trek but it just sounded silly, like a fan film that only had access to the selection of original sounds here at Trekcore in the library and they mix and match them into a scene not knowing what those sounds originally were used for.
Picard's Romulan helper had that strange magic wand that allowed her to playback past real time events, which is just basically magic, they tried to make it sound scientific by throwing in the word Leptons but it just didn't work. If it was a single frozen image of the Dahj and her boyfriend sat on the sofa, MAYBE I could have forgiven it but live playback with audio, that isn't science it is just magic.
The dodgy Vulcan/potential Romulan commodore whose office is on the ground floor with enormous open windows allowing anyone to look in on her secret meetings, which by the way are made even less secret by the ubiquitous use of holographic screens. If you were stood outside of her window, and you easily could as there seems to be zero Starfleet security even at HQ, you could learn everything about her secret plans.
The very contemporary speech used in the series is jarring when you consider this is supposed to follow on in the timeline from the TNG,DS9, VOY era where the vernacular was clearly established.
Lens flares are still cropping up, despite the clear dislike from many fans since the days of the 2009 reboot.
I only wish Narek had a moustache as he could have twirled it when he responded to Dhaj's comment that he would need authorisation to watch her work line "actually I don't" it was so hammy he may as well have delivered it straight down the lens and broken the fourth wall,
Speaking of Narek, the very late 90s James Bond line between his sister "I'm on top of it" "so it would seem" was so cheesy!
I just get the feeling this series was made to try and appease Star Trek fans who didn't necessarily like Discovery and wanted the familiarity of the TNG era of Trek but they are also trying to introduce new fans, so its sort of in the middle and not really working for me.
I'll grin and bear it for another episode or two, I'll really try and keep an open mind, but if we're going to be getting contemporary speech with their "dudes" "cool" and "secret-planny" type Buffy the Vampire speech and this odd mix of Discovery aesthetic I think I'll just quietly walk away and enjoy the Trek I've enjoyed for the last 25 years and let the new crowd enjoy this science-fantasy series that calls itself Star Trek.
It was nice to see some of Picard's mementos in the archive, I thought that was a nice touch but since the Enterprise-D crashed on Veridiian 3 wouldn't the Captain Picard Day banner have been destroyed? Maybe it was put in a storage locker or the one in the storage archives was a replica.
I'm not having a go at the people who like this new series, if you do that's great I'm happy for you but please don't take offense at my dislike of the show, I just expected something different to what has been shown so far and I'm disappointed.
I think I'll pick up a copy of David Mack's Destiny Trilogy I hear it's an excellent series and continues the post Nemesis timeline nicely.
