Star Trek TOS Phasers. Whats Out There ?

I am not sure I understand what your point is?

Is there evidence of "fat bottomed" communicators?? If so, I've never seen any. Not that I don't like my MR, mind you.

I'm sure that you're already well aware of the specifics regarding this ongoing issue....:lol

I would be more forgiving of the fat bottomed comm if it had not spawned its fat bottomed offspring and had been an isolated, one-time event.

Edited: I rethought it and Im not going to contribute to this nonsense anymore.

Well said. That is why I ultimately left ASAP. It became the "Fellowship of the Long" and the non believers were excommunicated. Frank was busy over on the Wars side and really didn't give a poop about what was going on.

I love to read a thread with a really good joke,,,:lol

What's so funny?
That it will be totally authentic or SUPER affordable? :lol:lol:lol

Exactly....I didnt say anything new that I havent said before and I know the end result will be the same. This thread was started by a fan and collector who wants a good phaser replica and I decided not to contribute any further to the hijacking of his thread.
So, to answer his question you have two mainstream options for a P1. You have the HMS version (available at Roddenberry.com) and the JLong version.
Price and skills needed to complete are different.
HMS-Made by the folks who did props for Trek for almost 2 decades and based on their Trials and Tribbleations model. Very easy to assemble, consistently high quality castings and very well made with concise illustrated instructions. Can be built with very minimal body work and is a straightforward easy build. Comes with certificate of authenticity and there is an optional electronics package.
Priced at $79.99
Jlong- Based on studying a screen used phaser from Greg Jeins collection. Features a fiberglass shell and all the bits and pieces needed to recreate the inner working mechanisms of the original. More advanced modeling skills are required and there have been some issues with warped or mismatched tops and bottoms but skilled builders have been able to compensate in those cases. This kit can be a little daunting for a beginner but if you put the time in (or pay somebody to do it) it builds in to a very nice replica with some neat original hero features such as rising site (the HMS does not have this).Good instructions and a certificate of authenticity included.
Priced at $199.99
Both kits can be seen to have their pros and cons depending on what it is you are looking to do. If you want to do a very nice easy build capable of handling a modern adjustable sound and light package for a good price I would recommend the HMS.
If you have the skills (or can afford to have somebody build it for you) and prefer a recreation of the original inner mechanisms replete with rising site and grain of wheat bulb then I would recommend the JLong.
HMS also has a P2 kit available for $200 +/- that of course includes the P1. It is an equally nice kit and an easy build.
It sounds like John finally has his own P2 in teh pipe which Im sure will also build in to a very nice replica.
So, the long and short of it is:
What do you want
What are your skills
What can you afford

Don simply said what needed to be said but like me, he is weary from the battle.

:sick

Just an addendum, but eFX (which took over the MR TNG tricorder license, soon to ship) has been making quiet noises about another attempt at a licensed hero TOS Phaser 2, and IIRC as per TrekMovie.com, it is now in the planning stages. :love Unclear whether this is what John was alluding to.... But this would be great news for anyone (like me) didn't get a Rodd.com/RACprops phaser in 2002 :cry , or the MR phaser in 2004 :unsure .

As someone who has a built-up Roddenberry.com/HMS P1, and a few other P1s (pristine EM midgrade; unk. maker with rising sight), I've repeatedly been tempted by a MR mint in box (MIB) coming up for auction, but catch my breath and get cold feet at paying "only $900" for something that seems to be prone to burnt out electronics. (I have a couple of MR tricorders from AJCollecting which also succumbed to faulty electronics.) What good is a great looking collectible that you dare not power on for fear of breaking it and losing your investment?

The Rodd.com kit of the HMS version seems a great bargain if you can put the effort into it, and can acquire some upgrade parts from Dstines (banned here since 2003(?)) or Captain JTK, among others. I have some stuff from both, really great. Are their electronics back in stock?

But at the moment, I suspect that in-the-know replica fans are watching what eFX can come up with. Who knows, we might see more MR phasers hitting the market, and the price coming down to traffic pattern altitude, as eFX gets closer.

Great times to be a Trekkie....

Care to sell the DStines? I love that phaser! Wish I had one. I hope EFX does TOS Phaser.

I have the same one and if I remember correctly, I paid $750 for it directly from him. That was my first TOS Phaser that with a rising site on it. I've only seen a couple of these come up for sale on Ebay and they were usually very expensive. I wouldn't even know what to ask for mine now, even if I wanted to sell it.

Here are a couple of pics of mine.
