Exactly....I didnt say anything new that I havent said before and I know the end result will be the same. This thread was started by a fan and collector who wants a good phaser replica and I decided not to contribute any further to the hijacking of his thread.
So, to answer his question you have two mainstream options for a P1. You have the HMS version (available at Roddenberry.com) and the JLong version.
Price and skills needed to complete are different.
HMS-Made by the folks who did props for Trek for almost 2 decades and based on their Trials and Tribbleations model. Very easy to assemble, consistently high quality castings and very well made with concise illustrated instructions. Can be built with very minimal body work and is a straightforward easy build. Comes with certificate of authenticity and there is an optional electronics package.
Priced at $79.99
Jlong- Based on studying a screen used phaser from Greg Jeins collection. Features a fiberglass shell and all the bits and pieces needed to recreate the inner working mechanisms of the original. More advanced modeling skills are required and there have been some issues with warped or mismatched tops and bottoms but skilled builders have been able to compensate in those cases. This kit can be a little daunting for a beginner but if you put the time in (or pay somebody to do it) it builds in to a very nice replica with some neat original hero features such as rising site (the HMS does not have this).Good instructions and a certificate of authenticity included.
Priced at $199.99
Both kits can be seen to have their pros and cons depending on what it is you are looking to do. If you want to do a very nice easy build capable of handling a modern adjustable sound and light package for a good price I would recommend the HMS.
If you have the skills (or can afford to have somebody build it for you) and prefer a recreation of the original inner mechanisms replete with rising site and grain of wheat bulb then I would recommend the JLong.
HMS also has a P2 kit available for $200 +/- that of course includes the P1. It is an equally nice kit and an easy build.
It sounds like John finally has his own P2 in teh pipe which Im sure will also build in to a very nice replica.
So, the long and short of it is:
What do you want
What are your skills
What can you afford
Don simply said what needed to be said but like me, he is weary from the battle.
