I'm wondering how accurate the Mystic Seer is. I'm no expert....please chime-in if you are. The SRP for the Mystic Seer is $250, limited edition, working coin mechanism, dispenses fortune cards, napkin and menu holder, and functions as a bank. The Talky Tina is 18" tall and SRP is $125 (also a limited edition) and it does talk (good, evil, and random phrases), eyelids open and close. Both scheduled for release Spring 2011.

Re: Talky Tina - Still going

The likeness on the Talky Tina isn't perfect, but recognizable. The original doll was 22", so this one is shorter, but I like how her outfit came out. Is the Mystic Seer in that article a prop or is it a bobblehead? I was under the impression that it was more like a bobblehead. I've seen all the 8" Mego-like toys and had heard rumblings about the "deluxe" Talky Tina a while back, but wasn't aware of a Mystic Seer replica.

I would love to get some work done on my own doll, but we've had record highs here lately and my house isn't air-conditioned. The room I do my projects in is like a furnace on hot days:(

The Mystic Seer coming out in 2011 is a prop replica, as shown on Michael Crawford's site (see previous link). A cheap, toy bobblehead version was released this year.

Odd, the picture I see in the Crawford link(2nd photo down) still looks an awful lot like the bobblehead. If this is the prop, it looks bad.

Re: Talky Tina - Still going

I tried to get a little work done on Tina tonight, but couldn't due to a massive headache. Someone on the Brikette forum was asking me about how to make her wink. Does anyone think a mechanism was specially made for those times one eye closes? The last time I watched it, I could have sworn there was a little skip in the film. I always assumed that they stopped the film, pushed her eye closed, and continued rolling the film. Any input?

If you worked out a pattern, would you be willing to offer 'upgrade' wardrobe for Brikette dolls? I wanted the 'official' replica, but now that you've shared with us how innacurate it is, I would rather put one together myself like you are doing....but I can sew as good as I can fly.

Re: Talky Tina - Still going

I'd be willing to make dresses, as long as mine came out really well. I'm using a reprint of a 50s doll dress, which is cut very similar to the one Talky Tina wore, plus a pattern for an original Brikette dress that was printed in a magazine to help with sizing.
Since the wig I got isn't quite like it seemed in the pictures, I'm doing a lot of work to make it recognizeable. I'd even be willing to give wigmaking a try - I know the basics of how they're made and I'm pretty good at rooting doll hair, if I do say so myself.

Re: Talky Tina - Still going

Well, if you're prototype works out pretty good you may have yourself a corner on the market by modifying these dolls.
I live in Lancaster and would love to see your doll in person whenever you get it done - heck, I'd even like to see your progress.
Keep it up!

Ok, I've got the video working through Photobucket. Just click on it and it should open in a new window.

Really great work! Where did you get the mechanism again??

It's from another old doll called "Walking Wanda" or "Wanda the Walking Doll."

I had to do a little more "surgery" on the torso to make it sit better. It also keeps the arm movement from getting messed up as much by preventing it hitting the windup key.

Remember to keep detailed records of all your work - I could see this being a good way to make some extra cash on the side for collectors who supply you with the doll to do a custom Tina....I know I would be your first customer!

Re: Talky Tina - Movin and groovin 9/12/10 w/ Video

I'm keeping detailed records of my work here, so other people can try it themselves:lol Seriously, I'm hoping people will see improvements to the way I did mine and post their work. That way I can go back and make one that works even better.
Besides, I've been working on this for so long and so sporadically, I'd have no idea how much to charge for my time.

Re: Talky Tina - Movin and groovin 9/12/10 w/ Video

I think I came up with a way to make the wig work a little better. When I posted pictures of it before, I mentioned that it didn't look quite as good in person as in the online catalog. I was under the impression that it was just a straight wig, with a center part and bangs. When I got it, the hair was rooted in a circular direction, and the part was only visible directly behind the bangs. When I put it in ponytails, it made the hair lay unevenly and made it look like there were thin spots underneath. I'm using a needle and synthetic hair to make the sides look more even. Then, I'll essentially reroot a part down the middle. That should cover up any remaining uneven areas and allow the hair to lay neatly in pigtails. Once the wig is done, I can attach the head to the body and post some new photos.
