Teaser pics of GF's Red 5

Yep, very saturated. If I was going to make a swatch for the target color, it'd be pretty close to this:

Depends on what pic you look at, a washed out one or this...I had to go in between

it sure is not what you are saying...I dont want to get in a debate over this...to each his own. I think I made the right choice

Dean

No problem Dean. Elsewhere on the board is a fairly boring thread about the absolute color references I've got for Red 5 if you're interested why I say that. Or you can ask Barry Jones next time you talk to him; either way...

All good here!!! Love talking models..Question...now, this is just a question nothing else, how can there be absolute color ref. when red 5 is trash. She is gone right? No model left for us to look at?:cry

If there are pics, they can look different in each photo as the 100 or so I have?

Just asking not STARING ANYTHING!! I am an empty cup and like being filled with knowledge!:lol

Dean

WOW!!!!:eek

OK now that I came down to my senses, just amazing!!!!

Dean painted my Blockade runner, Y-wing and now my V3 Red 5,

I just love your weathering technique, just TOP NOTCH!!! I'm a very very picky guy and takes alot for someone to impress me, though I've seen amazing builds/paintjobs in photos, Dean's works looks amazing in photos but even better in person. I concider myself a very good model builder just not at level when it comes to weathering, I can tell good work done with love and passion.

Thanks GF...I told you I was going to great extent to give you what you wanted:love

And yes you model building is fantastic!!!

I tried e-mailing you pics, they were all bounced back. Are you getting any of my e-mails?

looks like you've done the first build I've seen to correctly represent the nose-block grey stripe, also.

I agree on the accolades for Dean's paint-up.

But if you're referring to the long, skinny triangular-shaped grey stripes on the sides of the nose cone, these are evident in at least a couple published photos, and Dean would not be the first to incorporate them into a paint-up.

I agree with Mike only in that the yellow is often over done on replicas in general. I think Dean's looks fine.

To Dean's point, reference pics make it difficult to judge, and for anyone who has painted an X-Wing, we all know this is a hard color to nail. I used a mustardy yellow ochre on mine layered on thinly, hit it with white and black pastels to knock it back, and it still looks a tad bright. All my colors do, especially in photos. But in person they look just right.

Digital cameras have a far smaller dynamic range than film cameras - that's why all digital colour photos have 'over-separated' colours, i.e a yellow may appear too yellow, or a blue stripe may appear to occupy its own separate blue universe...

Anyway, outstanding paintjob on this Red 5.

I have used this method of swatching a few times now but I find the viewing angle makes a complete difference to the swatch, this swatch looks from a pink to a dark mustard depending on where I'm sat. Its tricky thing indeed to get color correct even if you get the viewing angle remotely near perfect.

I get a very saturated yellow, which is kind of like the yellow ive wanted to mix for a while, but never quite got it right, i like it anyhoo, for some reason, i always blow at mixing decent hues of yellow.
I think it also depends on what the yellow is applied over, changes the hue quite a lot from my experience?

Them's the ones, this was the thing Jason and I were debating a few months ago in that great X-wing thread. I've not seen a build prior to this where they were actual stripes; folk had been doing them as lines of smudging or laser hits. I have probably missed some as I was away from the boards over the southern summer.

There is a great side shot of Red 5 (left side of the model, in the trench, I believe) that is on one of the first few preface pages of a fairly recent trade paperback book on Star Wars. Can't recall the title of the book though, off hand. It may have been the companion to the When Sience Meets The Imagination museum tour.

I incorporated this initially in my FX toy conversion a year or two back, plus emulated this on my more recent Pro-Shop build.

But I digress - this is Dean's thread. Back to his model now!

Havent got a pic to hand, but i painted in the grey stripe on the nose for Chris' Salzo V1 build a good while back, though that part was at least a well known R5 trait.
