Hey guys! Sorry for the necrobump.
Im looking into putting together an 8th Doctor costume for a convention next month. Iv'e been able to source the jacket, belt, and a close enough waistcoat easily enough. (though you would be surprised how rare single-breasted paisley waistcoat with lapels actually is) but the one part that I keep getting hung up on is the notorious leather gaiters.
While WW1 leather half-chaps in wearable condition are relatively easy to source, the proper lace-up style that McGann wears seems to be super rare. Iv'e been poking around online and found that I can by tools for installing leather eyelets and lace hooks for pretty cheap on Amazon, and have been toying with the idea of just installing the laces myself in a regular pair of gaiters. Do you all think that this would be possible in 100 year old leather or would this just result in a big mess and ruined antique?
