The Babadook pop up book

My books finally arrived. First only one book, so I had to contact the babadook team again. And then a second one was sent. The second one, however, was one of the signed ones (not numbered)! While I was not with the first ones to order. So glad that I got this little extra. Now I have a signed and unsigned copy.

The books however are all having some very minor imperfections. slightly damaged pointy pieces of the cardboard popups, a very small tear somewhere, etc... Not big things, but not 100% perfect either (if I refer to my signature: good quality, but not "Rylo" quality). Not that I'm not happy with my books, but without these little imperfections, I would have been really thrilled. But I guess all books will have some of these very little damages, no? Too many very tiny edges and points that could get damaged...

But anyway, the book is also worn in the movie itself, so I guess it's not too bad...

What does Rylo mean?

Rylo.... there is a member here on the RPF names Rylo, who has established himself as one of the makers with the highest standards. Many people here measure quality in the following scale:
1. Bad
2. Okay
3. Acceptable
4. Good
5. Great
6. Outstanding
7.Rylo quality
ah! right, thought it was an Acronym! sat for ages trying to work it out!

Could not have said it any better than Moviefreak. If you own one or more props made by Rylo, you'll understand. I'm very, VERY critical when it comes to prop replica's, but could never find any point of critique one any of Rylo props I own. These are just made by a very talented perfectionist and are the best quality you can get. This is my personal opinion, off course, but I think everybody on the RPF can confirm that Rylo's quality is off the scale...

I could alter this list to the following:

1. Bad
2. Okay
3. Acceptable
4. Good
5. Great
6. Outstanding
6.75. RelicMaker quality
7.Rylo quality

;)

Another message from the makers:

“REMEMBER, UNLESS WE REACH OUR GOAL OF 2,500 BOOKS SOLD WE WON’T BE ABLE TO PRINT THESE BOOKS!
THE PUBLISHERS WON’T PRINT A RUN SMALLER THAN 2,500.

SO PLEASE, SEND THIS EMAIL AROUND TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY, SHARE THE LINK BELOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA, WE NEED TO REACH OUR GOAL SO WE CAN MAKE THESE BOOKS FOR YOU!

https://www.causewayfilms.com.au/babadookpopup

(Of course, if we don’t reach our goal, all buyers will be refunded, but we’d rather be giving you a book instead.)

Mmm, I doubt that they will reach the goal of 2.500 books. The movie is not recent anymore, and I guess all real fans already have a book from the first run... (OK, to be honest: I hope the second run doens't happen, because I still have an extra book I want to sell in the future, and the price I could get for it would be much less, if there is a second run. ;) )

Hope you are wrong, but that was my thought too. I wonder what #'s they would have to hit if they hopped the book price to $150?

They waited too long. If they would have immediately followed up run #1, when it sold out, with a second run, they would have seen a lot more interest.

I hope you’re all wrong. Everyone who wants one should get a chance to own this wonderful replica. It is one of my favorite horror props.
I always love props that function the way they do in the movie.

An update from the makers:

“WE ARE 10% OF THE WAY TOWARDS OUR BABADOOK BOOK PRINTING GOALS!

We've sold 10% of what we need to, to secure a small print run of a second edition Mister Babadook book.”

Another update:

Dear Babadookers,

Good news! We have reached our goal for minimum orders and our publisher has already started the printing process! These books will be made to the same high standards as the first edition, but they won’t be numbered or signed (they will be marked with a second edition label). More information is coming your way in due course as we keep you updated on the printing and shipping process. We expect the books to each you in early 2020, as promised.

PLEASE NOTE: A few people have not been able to meet the deadline & have requested a slight extension, so we have decided to keep the link open for a couple of weeks longer - this is their last chance to get a book as we won't be reprinting them! (This won't delay the printing time, we can just add those extra books to the current order.)
If you know of anyone else who missed out & still may want one, here is the link to
BUY A SECOND EDITION MISTER BABADOOK POP-UP BOOK.

I was really scared that they wouldn't reach the goal! I had to sell my book a while ago and I really did miss it, so happy I'll finally have another one!

Damn, I hoped to sell my spare one... Price will drop now, I think, although mine is a signed first edition... Well, I'll keep it for a little while longer, then...

Wouldn’t you want to keep your signed edition tho? If you’re buying a new one in the aim to re sell it, I don’t know if it’s really an ethical way of buying props, that is usually what the scalper term is attached to. ‍

To be clear: I have two signed editions at this moment. Not planning to buy the second edition. But I was always planning to keep the nicest of both books I have now, and sell the other one once...

I never buy a prop ONLY to resell it, but more than once, I buy two (sometimes three) copies of a prop in a limited run. The main reason for this, is that I can choose the nicest of those copies for my personal collection (consequence of being so autistic for details, I guess). But in many cases I can sell the second copy some months or years later with a bit of profit (in some cases with quite a lot of profit, even). This way, I can keep this hobby affordable.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. There's not much "ethics" involved when it comes to buying or selling prop replica's, I think? If I would ask who on this forum has never sold a prop with some profit, I think all of the "regulars" will be quite, no?

I consider it as a free market: if someone is willing to pay a certain price for a limited prop replica, so be it. I have a mint, boxed Sony MDR-5a for sale right now in the junkyard and I ask a rather high price for it, but in my eyes it's a reasonable price for such a rare item. If someone is willing to pay my asking price, we have a deal, if price is too high for everybody here, it will not sell. It's as simple as that. Only thing I have to ask myself is: do I want to lower the price, or rather keep it myself, or do I just keep the sale alive a bit longer and see if someone wants the item a the price I want?

But all this said... It's a bit off topic, I guess ;).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your mindset. I do the same thing. You almost have to in this very expensive hobby. Like you said, it's a way to keep this hobby affordable.

In that case that’s fair :), just wanted to point out how your post transpired as it seemed like a real disappointment to you to think the price might drop. If I had the money I’d propbably do the same to be honest, getting a few pieces in order to get the most accurate one. The book I had was pretty spot on, hoping I’ll get one of the same quality!
