THE HOBBIT swords

Thanks for sharing pics!

I really love the design of Balin's mace and I hope that United Cutlery will release its own version.

I kinda hope they don't now lol. Otherwise this one will end up being a $225 toy for real. I'd get tempted to do a durability test if I had a steel version of it instead. I'd rather the UC do a Deathless replica than Balin's Mace personally.

What you have is a prop replica in the truest sense, as that is basically what they used on set. Most of the Dwarven weapons were not made up as real weapons like Orcrist. They were created by the art department, molded, then cast in Polyurethane and painted, exactly like this replica.

United Fili sword replica, just announced.

YYYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSS! I'm so frakkin' excited! Wait, are they available for preorder or just announced? ... already have a spot on the wall for it lol

25 1/2 inches, I'm guessing the UC's 420 J2 stainless like with previous replicas? It looks awesome. So awesome. I wonder, are the tangs welded on or are the one piece construction? I know they're wall hangers I just can't help but ask. A definite addition for my collection without doubt. Only one place has them marked for pre-order. I'ma keep checking on budk's site since they're a lil', well, lot closer to home for me. Less shipping wait. lol Also, I just realized Fili had two of these ...

The Sword of Fili the Dwarf - UC2953 United Cutlery <-Site with pre-order

Thanks for posting Mr. Rae, a welcome find for me to get home from work and see this.

Not sure if Budk has them up yet, but I'm sure they will since they are a sister company to United. I saw CB Swords and Blade Center taking pre orders. The blades are cast AUS-6 stainless, pretty close to 420. They are big weighty chunks of steel, over 4lbs each, so too heavy to really wield as a usable weapon unless you are a Dwarf :)

Hmm. Couldn't find much on AUS-6 except "on par with 440 stainless." Except the site didn't specify on par with 440a or 440c. And the AUS-6 isn't used that much by many companies anymore. Save for some Japanese company listed. However if it can rival 440c stainless I'd say the potential for functionality could be there. Not that I would sharpen mine. I know 440a and 420 J2 are considered "soft steels" and in knives edge retention lacks with those steels. I have a 420 katana I bought from Budk when I was in school back in 05, cosmetically AWESOME sword but just drawing in and out the sheath in iaido caused it to loose it's edge lol. Honestly though, 3 years of twice a week classes should do that to any stainless I'd think. Either way I realize they're wall hangars meant for display, but I like to think the inner child in all of us sees some functionality in them.:lol I see theres a $30-$40 difference in those site's pre-order listing too. Also I took some more/good Fleshing Knives pics for yall early. Enjoy :)

Side note, what do you think the odds of Gimli's Walking Axe/Gloin's Axe being thrown back into production are? Oh! The throwing axe version of it would be pretty epic!

It's actually a similar spec to 420, but what UC is using is really the Cr designation, since these are made in China, like 90% of all products with blades these days. 420/AUS6-A/2Cr13/5Cr13 - those are all general use blade stainless steels. But, as you say, these are really wall hangars. They don't even ship with a sharpened blade edge.

As far as Gimli's Walking axe returning, doubtful right now. Depends on how much it gets seen in the next two films.

Hey Kit,

Do you know if UC is going to do a 'Museum Collection' edition of the "Orcrist"?

The whole line is still fairly new to the market, so figures are not really in yet. If the line does well, it's a possibility. I won't confirm if there will or won't be at this point, but I can't really reveal what United has in the works for the Hobbit line until they officially announce it anyway.

All I can say is we are working on a lot of items you will see in films 2 and 3, a few more from film 1, and a few new LOTR items.

NOT....ENOUGH....WALL....SPACE....

Still, I really need to snag an Orcrist. Might can find the space for THAT one :lol

I hate waiting to hear info someone already knows, but can't tell us!:cry

Well, I guess this gives me time to finish collecting the old stuff I haven't collected yet...:lol

What do you guys think? Dwalin's Axes from WETA, or UC's Sword of Fili? My only worry, double up, I'd hate Dwalin's Axes in polyurethane, and have the UC push them out months later in steel, thats my only real cause for hesitation. So. Fans decide!!

There are no plans for UC to make Dwalin's axes currently, and I doubt there will be in the future.

How is UC's Orcrist put together? Mr. Rae? Like generally you can look at a pommel and put it together in you head. But Orcrist, looking like a solid tooth ... does the tang slide in and stay with adhesive? Guessin'

Yeah, that was a fun one to figure out! (not). Basically the same as the other LOTR swords. The tang tapers down to a point and comes out the back end of the grip, then it is threaded, with a steel plate and nut locking it together. The pommel is fitted and epoxied over that. I wouldn't go chopping brush with it though. The grip had to be something that could be polished to remove the mold parting lines without melting, so we had to use an acrylic composite. The material is so thin at the end of the grip, it will probably shatter with a lot of stress on the tang. If we do a Museum Collection version, something different will have to be done there.

Not a sword.. but imma leave this mattock here for this thread.. I thought about doing a build thread, but I'm a slacker when it comes to that. this is a 2x2, a 4x4, some EVA coated with spray vinyl and real leather grip for my Bofur costume.
