The Hunger Games - Discussion Thread (no spoilers please!)

Never read the books but I do plan on seeing it the near future. My only issue is the similarities to Battle Royale. I'm trying to go in with an open mind instead of thinking that this is a ripoff of one of my all time favorite films.

However, STOP THE FREAKING CAMERA SHAKING!

AMEN,

nothing more annoying then FAKE SHAKEY CAM. C'mon, if you want shakey cam, throw the camera on your shoulder and shoot with a telephoto lens. But putting a camera on a tripod and then shaking it looks frakking stupid and makes me want to flush my head down a toilet. ARRRG

Go see it for sure!

My advice is to see BOTH! :lol

It's not that bad of a movie.

I am hard on movies.

drakeprimeone summed it up nicely.

Battle Royale was the first it is a gritty Japanese cult classic that Tarentino has enourmous respect for.

The Hunger Games is a typical Hollywood rehash on a similiar concept

Kinda funny that Battle on Blu-ray was released this week

Already picked it up. :) I also have the Japanese DVD import. What's even funnier, is that BR is doing a limited showing across the US in theaters this year. And I'm going to the final showing at the UC. :)

Wow thanks for the link!

It's not showing any where near me but thats great that they are showing it in theatres.

I also have the import and just placed the anchor bay release in my amazon cart! :lol

Funny thing about all this is my friend who turned me onto this with a bootleg in 2000 is over In Japan as we post probably stalking Aki Maeda! :lol

Just got back from seeing the movie and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. Jennifer Lawrence does a great job as Katniss. Now I need to read the books! :D

The only thing I wished they'd explained was
why Peeta was helping the District 1 and 2 teams hunt Katniss, what with his professions of love early on.

In Response:

I think in the book Haymitch says that he told Peeta to go with the careers as he knew that Peeta could not survive on his own, It was also to lead them away from Katniss

Just got from seeing this. Never read the books, in fact never even heard of the books until the movie was beginning production.

I found the film a lttle long. Additionally, while it was well acted it lacked a villian to drive the last half of the film. Production values were ok but nothing amazing. In the end it felt like a well made tv film instead of a motion picture.

There definitely is a villain. The books go in to much more detail.

Also all this Hollywood rehash stuff... blame that part of the book if that's your thoughts. The movie is an adaptation of the book.

Read the whole trilogy prior to watching film. Film was excellent. Perfect casting. Certain minor elements were changed to keep this film on schedule, but nothing that takes away from the story. Was very impressed with the look of the Capitol. Can't wait for the next installment.

No Br was the first to use it, children killing children, that is, as it was banned in a few countrys.

Post some of the many examples as I would like to see how they handled that premise

Of course the Romans started it all by throwing children to the lions with a slingshot and some rocks :lol

No, specifically using children is more unique, and as far as mainstream goes, limited to these two (as far as I know). Yet considering the series was targeted for young adults to begin with, of course it's going to use teenagers. The series continues beyond the games anyway.

But the fight to the death in a futuristic society with corrupt, exploitative media isn't unique at all. Quick google search popped this up... Before The Hunger Games, Watch Eight Other Battle-to-the-Death Movies -- Vulture

I liked Battle Royale too, but just not buying the ripoff claims since the theme in general is extremely derivative.

Whether Collins ripped of Battle Royal is debateable, but the cancellation of all efforts to produce an American remake of BR because of Hunger Games absolves her of too much criticism in my eyes.

I agree that a weakness of the film was not building up the BIG VILLAIN as much as they should. It was built up better in the book.

Clearly the movie was INSPIRED by Battle Royale. There's no getting around that. But she puts enough spin and difference on it to make it her own, but anyone who says there's no connection to Battle Royale is kidding themselves.

Eh... Looked through the list and only two stand apart as being remarkably similar. Guess which two. movies like death race, running man, and gamer all involve people being forced too kill against their will but that is where the similarity ends. Making the characters children and exploring how innocent kids are forced to kill each other by a government as punishment for a quashed rebellion is a line that crosses over into questionable similarity. As an example Volcano and Dantes Peak are similar however if we changed the main two characters in Dantes Peak to a tough emergency response coordinator and a geologist then set it in New York and people would raise eyebrows.

Hunger Games: 155 Million in 1 week
John Carter: 65 Million in 3 weeks.

What's this? A masculine manly man who conquers Mars is stumped by a film about a teenage girl who is not whining about her handsome boyfriend?

..... I like this. I like this a lot.
