The Last of Us HBO Joel Thread

Movement holder contact got back to me. Sent case+movement etc to him!

Now it's just a matter of him printing out the movement holders etc.

Dial contact was able to use the laser etching to make the dials at the 32mm sizing, and also, used the laser etching on the other side to get it down to .40 mm! Now it'll pair perfectly with the holder/movement.

Just waiting for everything to get fabricated!

Will keep you all posted.
Any chance you'd be willing to supply pieces for the kit? Namely the movement and etched aluminum face? I've actually had the 38mm weekender for awhile now, just found this entire thread and I'm really wanting to try throwing it all together myself :)

Hey Guys,
I'm going start taking orders "The Last of Us" joel's backpack.
I have started a limited run separatly and here is the link, Limited Run - The Last of Us Backpack!.

Thanks,

Looks amazing!!!!

I love every little detail you put in to this. Truly exquisite work.

Jameel, did you ever figure out what the second backpack material was? Just curious.
That backpack looks to me thick cotton material, like cotton drill fabric.

I would definitely be down in selling a kit, thought at this point, it might be around $200. Only because, things that are custom made, like the movement holder, cost $100 each. The dial is also costing me around $100 each, because in order to get the dial at .40 mm thickness down from .60 mm, the fabricator is using the laser to shave off the back. Over an hour each dial! Harder to sand down at an even rate lol.

If anyone is interested, a "kit" would have the following:

Though I highly encourage everyone to head over to Esslinger to order the following!

  • 1 X Watch movement holder (This is custom made, and is necessary for the watch - I could order through my contact, and you could pay me, etc).
  • 1 X Benchmark watch strap - Green - 20 mm (You can find this on Amazon).

Hopefully soon I’ll have time and the extra cash to test out the cracked stickers but I saw someone do a Joel inspired watch with a cracked glass and they actually put a smart phone screen protector over the glass to keep it all in place! That may be something to look into or think about :)

Sidenote I’ll be taking pictures of the Henry/Joel backpack I have which I would love to pull templates from and post here!

Finally I have had some time to take a bunch of pictures of the Joel/ Henry backpack that I got lucky to find! The two main differences are the main leather buckle for the large compartment of the backpack is different from the show and it is missing the straps with the D rings on the front of the backpack straps. From seeing screenshots from the show and comparing it to this backpack I think they custom-made the bag but this is what it is directly based off of, I have also left some screenshots from the show for the missing parts and comparison. I don’t know when I’ll have time but I would really like to make rough templates from this bag and post them here, but as I said I do not know when I’ll have time. But I hope these photos at least help anyone wanting some more reference :)

Is that a Seiko SKX007 with Nato strap?
I got one SKX007 myself, apparently the NATO strap is quite cheap, gotta get me one of those!

On the matter of watches, I found that Morris Aviator T1 (left one) is a very good match as well
I will probably get a Hamilton Khaki Field however, it's very similar to (the right one), it's very similar to the timex expedition.

I've been searching for a real world watch for quite a while that mimics the show's design and I really like the Shinola Runwell 47mm. Get a red hand and a NATO strap and it's a really close match. It's about the same price as the Hamilton.

I'm fairly confident I've found the undershirt worn under the Fjallraven shirt. Unfortunately its NOT the Todd Snyder sweatshirt and the thing that tipped me off was actually from the latest ep of Ted Lasso in Amsterdam. He's wearing an orange Todd Snyder x Champion sweatshirt, and the v-stitch at the collar is too big to match the undershirt in the Last of Us. Also, in the scene wearing Joel is digging Henry's grave, you can see the hem style, and its not that longer "sweatshirt" type hem, it matches to this shirt.
Its from National Athletic Goods, their Gym tee in Oatmeal. Made in Canada and can't buy direct from them but stocked at a decent amount of stores. Pretty sure its oatmeal, but lighting could make it look that colour when its actually the ash grey

These images below really sealed it for me; right click and click "open image in new tab" to see higher res version.

I found a great version of this undershirt on Amazon. Very similar design and works great with the costume!

That is a sweatshirt so its going to be a lot more heavy even with it being lightweight. If you want that extra weight and warmth and it fits under the shirt, then good stuff! Other wise a long sleeve tshirt is going to be the way to go.

It's not, though. It's fairly thin. Basically a long sleeve tee.

It's not a sweatshirt. I bought a couple of them to check sizing...both are fairly lightweight, like a long sleeve tee. You can see in the set photos after Kansas City that it has a little more weight to it than a regular t-shirt too. I attached a photo of my costume build for comparison.

I got a couple of these myself too and while not quite the same thing, the sweatshirt definition is not that far off. If you put that on, plus the Fjallraven shirt, plus the jacket.... you're good to go on a fairly cold winter day. Now that summer is here, the Fjallraven shirt alone, without anything under, can already be a bit too much if the weather is over 21°C/70°F. Those undershirts are definitely meant for cold weather.

Mine is considerable thinner than what I would consider a sweatshirt. It's a slightly thicker long-sleeve t-shirt. That said...consider why Joel was wearing it, within the framework of the show. Just because its' too warm for you to cosplay in, doesn't mean that it wasn't correct for him to wear in Kansas City in the fall in a world where all of the clothes you wear are on your back. ;)
