The new Captain America??

Hmmm I'm on the fence on this one-- I would actually rather they pick an unknown---Christopher Reeve style...

So tired of Michael Keaton being brought up for every casting role complaint.

It's going to take a lot of hard work to make John look like a battle-hardened, All-American soldier. I really can't picture a smirking Cap with baby eyes. He'd make a much better Bucky.

Not my choice but then again I thought that Mr. Mom cast as Batman was a bad idea, and a short, druggie cast as Tony Stark was a bad idea and I ended up loving them both. :rolleyesApparently I don't know nothin' so I will wait for the film and just hope it turns out well, as I love the character.

The latest is that Fox isn't sold on him, and they have brought in Chris Evans who will be testing next week. Director still wants him, Fox does not.

Captain America is at Fox???

Acting chops are important - the most important thing, of course - when it comes to casting these roles. However, certain traits are intrinsically tied to some characters. Blue eyes and blonde hair can be faked, but the presence cannot. This guy has to be awe-inspiring, larger than life. This is someone who other Marvel superheroes are supposed to be awestruck and intimidated by. I like John Krasinski just fine, but I just don't think he'll ever have the intensity or the commanding presence just standing there that Cap needs to be work on screen. Anything less than the larger-than-life legend in the flag costume is silly. I'm always glad to hear them going for "actors" for these parts rather than models, bodybuilders, or wrestlers, but to pretend there are NO physical or vocal considerations is a mistake.

I too get tired of the Keaton-as-Batman analogy, and the Downey-as-Stark analogy. First off, the majority of the negative reaction to the Batman casting was the assumption that it meant they were going a comedic route (a la Adam West) at a time when everyone was riding high on the Dark Knight and Death in the Family books, more serious source material. Information on upcoming productions wasn't available the way it is now. People would have accepted him much more readily if they knew the tone of the film. Secondly, Keaton did practically nothing as Batman. He barely spoke and he was barely visible. Bob Ringwood and Tim Burton's Batman is really what people responded to in the end, not Keaton. I don't mean to take anything away from him; he was fine there, but the movie would have been as successful with almost any other actor in the role. As for Stark/Downey, I don't know what revisionist history is going on there... I'm sure some people disagreed with it, but I seem to remember the overall response to that being extremely positive, with most people pointing out the parallels between Downey's life and Stark's. Both of these references are pretty weak arguments trying to take steam out of a legitimate casting concern with this film.

I don't get why there is ANY concern yet. No one has been offered the role.

Here's why, from the linked article:
Insiders at the Marvel compound tell Fox 411 that he is close to landing the superhero gig of his life. John, who plays Jim on "The Office," has appeared in front of producers repeatedly since the start of the new year and since rumors began in February.

"John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests," our source tells us. "He has screen tested 2 times so far. It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week."

We discuss it because this is the stuff we're into and we care about it. No harm there.

I never said not to discuss it. Hell, it interests me. What I said was "I don't get why there is any concern yet", and I do not. I read a different article that says there are three or four being offered the role.

This is all putting the cart before the horse.
