Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Helmet Build V2

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

great build you have there. love how it's so professionally organised and exact! i've found too that epoxy putty is great. it's very manipulable and if u have some simple tools (sometimes even a flat piece of plastic) it will do exactly what you need it to. check out my guy manuel build if you have the time! would appreciate something other than 'silence' in that thread..

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Okay, I have a day off at home so I thought I would throw up some more photos of the sculpt. There really isn't much to these threads because all I'm really doing is sanding, but.....whatever, I have nothing better to do right now.

First off, new respirator. I usually buy a brand new one about every three months. Make sure yours is designed for paint fumes, my last one was the wrong kind. But, as they say, a mask is better than no mask.

Then, the sculpt.

A follower of my work has noted that some of the edges are too smooth and I completely agree, so i will be sharpening those before molding.

Also, that is just a test ear puck, not the final piece.

more to come.

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Another boring update.....This time with more Nostrils.

Also, if it's not noticeable, I shortened the mouth and squared the edges. I think it looks perfect, so I can now call that finished.

Then we get to the nose vents. I have a TON of cleanup to do on those. But, all in good time my friends.

Also have some cleanup on the ear canals. That plumbers putty is a Beach to sand, but it's working out for me so far.

I'm trying to get ready to mold next week, but if it's not perfect I won't do that. I'm not going to rush this. NO way whatsoever. So, it could be another week, it might be another month. Who knows?

That's it for this time. Anything you guys want to see in this thread? Like materials or tools I use? Maybe some pics of my setup or something? I feel that these updates are getting progressively more boring each update.

More to come.

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

I know what you mean about the boring feeling but i say keep them coming anyway.

Thanks man. I say that because all I'm really doing in this build is sanding....the base pep file I worked with really doesn't need any extensive modification or anything.

Either way, things will liven up in a bit. :)

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Oh the weather outside is frightful......and I hate Canada.....and Santa Claus isn't real......Yeah.......

Anyway, big update. Went Pinski on the helmet and added some PVC inserts for the ear pucks.

This changes a lot of the dimensions on the helmet.......sadly.....so I have tons of work ahead of me.

The ear pucks need to be resized and redone completely. The mid seam needs to be filled and repositioned. (more deja vu? )The PVC has to be sanded flush with the helmet body. Yuck. Lots to do.

More to come. This will push molding back a few weeks, but the end result will be much more professional.

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

you've sanded right down to the pep file, and Canada isn't so bad, i've just got back from there, this morning, lovely place, not so much the city though, anyway. slow going tedious work I see, worth it in the end though but im a little lost in your method now...

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Yeah, it looks like I've gone crazy, but what I'm doing has been done before by a few guys. It'll make more sense with the next update, I swear.

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Here ya go Rosskow.....cus I think you might be the only person that reads this thread :))). Here is what happened with those pieces of PVC.

I finally managed to smooth out the divider between the helmet and the pipe. This allows the ear pucks to just slide right in.

*Please note-This is just a test puck, taken from my Last Thomas helmet ear puck mold. I will be lathing brand new ones in the coming weeks.*

The fitment is PERFECT! Super tight.

This saves me about 1 hour of work on each cast.

Everything is really starting to take shape!!!!!!!!!!!! Trying to be ready to mold by next weekend.....but don't hold me to that.

More to come.

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Hey, you've got more than one follower of this project! It's looking pretty damn incredible!

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

It's really taking shape now man. The reworking has really made a big improvement, its getting even more daunting for me now tho. Those ear pucks look like a bit of a bugger to say the least! Needless to say I've had to restart my pep all together because my cat climbed into the pep helmet I had and decided to pee in it. So that was a step back lol.

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Definitely following :D Thanks for detailing the process, I'm learning lots. Your work is seriously fantastic!

Molding is the bane of my existence at the moment so I'm looking forward to seeing that XD

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Subscribed! looking for something like this for some time, glad I stumbled to this!

Re: Thomas Bangalter Daft Punk Encore build

Been out of following the punks for a little while now, is that how Thomas wears his nostrils now? :lol

Clean job buddy! Kills what I did last year! Great job!

Thanks Igor! I've gone back to your build quite a few times for ideas, like the PVC ear caps and for molding. There are still a lot of thing I like better about your sculpt though, like the flat step between the visor and the dome.

Thanks again everyone.
