Tick Tock..................A work in Progress

here's an update to the sketchup 3D model. The more I do this on the computer, the easier I think it will be to build for real when the time comes.

Ok, a quick update. The 3D Sketchup model is 99.9% done. I have not been able to find clear enough references for the glyphs carved in the outer ring, or those on the actual faces on the inside of the clock. If anyone has really clear reference pics of these, let me know and I will add them.
The model has been uploaded to the Google 3D warehouse for any and all to use at there own discretion. Personally, I hope it helps me build one as a real prop. You all are welcome to help if you're so inclined. If you do not want to bother with getting Sketchup (its free), Ill try to do up a set of multi view drawings if there is enough interest.

another great TR prop that would be awesome to own.

did you ever get those reference pictures by the way? And if not, would you still be interested?

I was thinking of the Royal Army of OZ Tick Tock

Same here!:lol
Awww shucks, I was really hoping it would be from Return to Oz:cry

SURE!! I dragged this out of the attic yesterday as a mater of fact. Having moved a year ago, a lot of stuff got boxed up and forgotten about. Any and all reference pics available are more than welcome, particularly those that indicate the inner markings and those that suggest scale. Thanks.

Guess Ill drag this thread out for a little bump. Other projects and the economy seem to keep this on the back burner, but it is still simmering. :) I recently transferred the 3d drawing of the lid to an STL file and it is currently being printed by Shapeways. I never did get any better reference pics, so I am using my best guess at about a little over 4" or so as the diameter of the inner clock part. Ill let you know how it turns out when I get it.

So. I received the piece from Shapeways today. I am more than impressed! It will provide a great base to build off of and make a master for casting. I decided on 4 inches instead of the original 4.5 for the diameter. Its very durable, and very light weight.

NICE! I will keep watching this thread for sure. Good to see that you are picking this project back up.

Looking good!

Could you post a photo that is a bit sharper, to give an idea on the roughness of the surface? More light might help if you are using a phone camera. :thumbsup

Thanks,
Michael

The material I am using from Shapeways is what they call "White, Strong, and Flexible". it is nylon and is printed using a method called SLS or Selective Laser Sintering. In its natural process, SLS gives a slight pebbled texture to it. Shapeways has an option to run it through a polishing process and the finished piece is very smooth. Much like any other "industrial" piece of plastic that was injection molded. I am not overly concerned about this as these pieces will at the least be used as a "one-off", or best case as casting masters for a possible run. Oh, the base price is $1.50/ sq cm. of finished piece.

Check out this page for more details.

There is a link in the upper right corner if you want to check out the other material options they have.

Quick update and a request.

The mount for the eye and the eye itself ran into a few snags with Shapeways. Seems some of the details are a little too small for the process I wanted to use. Have to do a little re-design and up the price for a different machine/ material. Oh well.
I could still use some help on trying to decipher the text on the inside of the dials as well as the outer edge of the main piece. I also need some suggestions for how to duplicate the texture on the backside as well. Attached pics in case anyone wants to give this a shot.

Turned towards trying to decipher the images on/ in the clock. I have come to hypothesize that the whole thing represents an astrological chart of some kind. I think the symbols on the outer ring may be numbers in some foreign text, but I do not know which one, if at all. The symbols on the inner 8 rings appear to be those of the signs of the zodiac in, again multiple cultural languages. If you take a look at the attached photo, you can clearly make out the symbols for Aries, Capricorn, and the two wavy lines of Aquarius. The others I cannot seem to ID in this character set, so may be way off base here. What say you?
My theory started because there are twelve divisions around the face, 12 numbers on a clock, 12 months in a year, 12 signs of the zodiac, etc...

Ok. So reading foreign languages and symbols is REALLY hard!! Figured I'd kill some time by actually building part of this thing. Got to work on the inner case using my test print of the lid and a vac formed dome for the bottom. And yes, that really is a large tuna can I am using as a base to build off of. :) Its trimmed down to a 7/8" depth. It looks fatter than it really is, and with the outer ring which I am figuring to be about 3/4" thick, it will seem even slimmer.

Ok. so it looks like I'm the only one keeping up with this. On the chance this thread has not fallen off everyones radar, Ill post a few more progress pics.
I laminated some styrene to some 1/2 inch Ultra board and carved out the outer ring for the clock. Its still rough and needs a lot of sanding and puttying, not to mention the carved glyph details, but its coming along nicely. I also received the bottom shaped piece from shapeways so its starting to look more and more like the prop.

wow, great work. this is looking awesome! I was looking at making one, but didnt know where to start.

Cant wait to see this finished. Will you be selling copies?

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the interest. Back when I first started researching this, it was a popular thing to want to have. Seems its fallen off most peoples interest radar so I am primarily doing it for myself, on my own schedule. **IF** I were to offer copies, it would likely be only a partial kit and you would need to be an experienced modeler to finish it properly. I am drawing a lot of the parts in 3D and having them 3d printed so it would be feasible, but I doubt very cost effective.
