Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

ALL of the WalMarts anywhere near me stopped carrying fabrics too. :( I am heartbroken as they usually had odd stuff that I could never find at Fabricland, which is now my only resource. You'd think with a name like that they should have whatever I need! Not so much!! Though I did make out with a TRUCKLOAD of stuff today!! FINALLY got everything I need for my sleeveless shrunken Alice dress and I absolutely and finally adore the colours!

I really didn't want to, but I went with a not-overly-shiny satin for the Hatter coat...though that li'l puppy is going to be so grunged and layered up by the time I'm done with it I'm hoping it will not even be recognizable as to what material I used. ;) I got a nice purple for the inside too...not too bright, not too dark...it's called 'Princess somethingorother....' ... I'm just going to avoid telling Travis that because he will probably have some ridiculous protest against wearing it. >_>

I also got, for $3, a metre of that Princess stuff in the most perfect salmon pink I have ever seen in my entire life ( to remake the band on the hat ). I held it up to the picture I have pinned on my wall and couldn't resist a little dance because I was so surprised at how perfect it is!!!! I think with the leftover, I'll make a few extra hat bands and throw them up on ebay or something to add some extra cash to my costuming funds.

Anyways, I'm off to see how far I can get with my shrunken Alice dress! Pics to follow!

And thanks for all of the warm welcomes and compliments!

That's the thing, nearest fabric store in general is an hour or more away. So I envy evryone who can just go out and look for fabric. :(

Same goes for people who get their stuff tailored to fit them. :(

Just a little note: Travis had bought that $11 patch replica off Ebay about 3 weeks ago...havent received it or heard from the seller since. Though it's coming here from HK or wherever to Canada, it hardly, if ever ( I don't think it has ) takes this long...he said he's going to contact them today so hopefully I have a happy update on that this week, but just wanted to send out a warning that if we do receive it, if anyone else here plans on getting it, you may want to give yourself ample time. Especially since the movie comes out soon!!!

In other news, my dandelion Alice dress is about half done!! I think it's a little bit floufier than hers...it almost looks like an evening gown in some strange way ( maybe, just maybe because I tried it on with heels stilettos )...but it's super pretty and girly. Pefect to wear opening day without dying of heat in my Queen costume and smudging my makeup with popcorn! Though admittedly, I'm just not brave enough to wear something SO out there to the movies. That'll be Trav's job as the Hatter. I'm sure he won't mind the spotlight. ;)

Here's a peek at the dress thus far. And this was only in a few hours! I'm so happy I didn't have any hungry-sewing-machine issues with this as I usually do...( and yes, my Red Queen happened to get to me, angry that I was making an Alice for the movie instead, before I could take the picture... )

Sadly, I couldn't find any dotted voile or organza so mines just a plain powder blue. I might embroider the dots into it in my spare time ( if I have any ) before the movie, however... now on to the ribbons, flower and trim! :D And maybe taking a couple inches off the bottom hem, too...hmmm...

You do know that this is not a uniform and concise dress, right? Having read the script I can fill you in on some info about it. The more Alice shrinks, the more shredded her Garden Tea dress becomes. What she is wearing in this scene and in the scene where she meets the Hatter are shredded remnants of her dress she has haphazardly tied around herself since her clothes aren't shrinking with her.

Yep! I know about the re-making of dresses depending on size. I think this is the smallest one she has since in the cap I took she's as tall as a dandelion ( hence why I call it the dandelion dress ). It's also what she's in when she's riding on his hat, and on the Bloodhound so it's got a fair amount of screentime.

Compared to the tiered dress ( that's mainly shown in the previews; meeting the hatter, walking with the tweedles ) this one's definitely much less shreddy and more clean and real looking so I decided on it as opposed to the other and I just don't have enough interest in the Garden Tea dress right now to spend the time on it whereas this one's also taking minimal time to make...other than it taking an hour alone to pin the lace around the bottom hem... blegh!

And NOW I move on to making a million metres of ribbon for the bust!

This movie is going to put me in the poorhouse!!! I'm pretty sure Travis wants a war Hatter as well and I KNOW I'm going to make what I'm calling Alice's Red Hearts dress too. They're all just such interesting and fun designs!!

Sadly, I couldn't find any dotted voile or organza so mines just a plain powder blue.

Mood in NYC has a ton of dotted swiss batiste. You can call and order swatches. They do charge for them, but its only like 50 cents. Might charge shipping since you're in Canada too. Probably too late for this info, but I though I'd throw it in there for anyone else looking.

Very nice dress! :D

I got the Mad Hatter wig today! :D So pics were in order! Got my shirt as well...Just need...well...Evrything else. :lol

Kudos, Jodo, on using the 4 colours for the eyeshadow!!

My bf got me a 120 colour eyeshadow palette for Christmas and the first thing I said was " AHHH! This will be perfect for the Hatter when the movie comes out! " ... wondering if those were his intentions all along! Ha haha! jk...

My dress is even further along now and it looks FABULOUS! I'm so happy with it thus far...I made all of the ribbon for the top and now just have to sew the black edges on before pinning it all in place and sewing it down and then just a fluffy flower detail and she'll be complete! I'll just have to work on an excuse for how Alice's 3 inch dress grew large enough to fit a 5'4 me. :D

I keep going to the fabric store to pick up stuff here and there but I'm horrible at making lists, and if I do, I'm horrible at remembering to bring them so any one costume requires at least 5 separate trips...but I'm so dumbfounded with the vest. I just can't decide what colours I want to use or how to go about it. Chad, I love the way yours looks and I've been thinking of something similar...I'm just doubting my patience on it. :S But then I find myself considering picking up a dark dark navy and hand pinstriping it and painting in the detail in every other square...am I crazy or just crazy??

I did hand pinstriping for the Jokers pants and wanted to scream and jab my eyes out by the end. I fear that if I attempt this for the vest, though it's much less area to cover...I may end up looking like the March Hare instead of Alice by the time the premiere comes...

Anyways, for anyone making Alice's Garden Tea dress ( though I don't think anyone here is as it seems there are mostly Hatters! ), Swarovski is going to be selling an inspired collection and one of the pieces is a replica of her Sparrow necklace! It's super pretty...and shiny... I think the prices run from around $80-$180 or something...Hot Topic has a cheap replica too but...oooh Swarovski....

Jack_Savvy, I got that pin cushion ring you mentioned a few pages back! It's so cute and vintagey looking !

Wow, the shape of that wig is actually pretty great. I'm still not convinced on the color ... but that can be remedied. I might have to pick one up.

Nick, for colour try ebaying "pumpkin orange wig". I think most of those are GREAT in colour. And it'd be a lot easier to dye a lighter coloured kanekalon darker as opposed to brightening up a synthetic costume wig...not that I have any experience in dying wigs, but any time I've wet a costume wig that's synthetic it's just turned into a garbled knotted mumjumbled tangled mess whereas kanekalon is quite easy to wash and re-style. Though all of this is void if you were planning the sharpie-by-hand method.

What I'm thinking of doing is either a hot water treatment on kanekalon and putting it in braids for a wavy/crimpy look or buying a low heat styling iron with plates that you can put waves, crimps etc.... I know you're not supposed to use heat styling on synthetics but I've done it with great success on low heat. If it gets a bit too hot, the worst that happens is that the fibers sort of melt...and not that they actually get sticky and really melt, they just get this crazy frazzeled shape that's unfixable...it actually would look quite similar to the Hatters hair!

Of course as with any fan made re-creation there's lots of room for personal preference! The colour Chad and Jodo have is really nice and the shape is super, too! Almost a sell for me as I'm not a huge fan of wig styling...but personally I think it's a little bit too natural in colour. I just see the Hatter as very bright and bold! So the " pumpkin orange " colour is fabulous to my eye!! It's reddy-orange without being too much of either. :D Though I may darken it a smidge with the sharpie in rubbing alcohol method...

I must say though, the Hatter is the most fun and hated costume I've made to date. It's SO much fun to look at and put together but all of the colour discrepencies and differences from screen grab to artwork to photos to exhibits is quite frustrating! Then again, the whole colour changing aspect of the costume is a fabulous excuse to say any coat can be the right shade of brown...or blue...or whatever other colour it may turn...

mini-update on the dress:

Sorry for the annoying side by side again, I had already thrown it together to show my cousin and was too lazy to recrop. :)

Thanks aelynn! :D

I actualy like the color of the funny guy wig more than the real wig. It's obvously not as orange, but it reminds me of being "real" crazy mad hair. And not fake orange clown hair. :lol

yeah The reason I went with this wig is because in all of the giant 30 foot posters of the hatter his hair is a more natural orange, and since the giant posters are what people are going to be familiar with whether they've seen the movie or not, that was what influenced my descision as far as wig goes.

Hey...Does anyone have any pics. of Alice's dress? My sister thinks she wants to go as Alice this year, so we're gonna need ref pics! :D

Jodo, which dress?
- Garden Tea ( the beginning one )
- Small Alice ( the tiered ruffled one )
- Tiny Alice ( the one I'm making )
- Giant Alice ( the Red Queen Court one )
- Boat Alice ( from the ending, though were the first BTS shots released ... the skirt is all ric rac and she also has a long blue coat )

I have a few of the different sized ones, a bundle of the first and a few of the last...let me know and pm me your email if you'd like them! Or I can upload to a photobucket or something?

Hmmm, could I see the Garden Tea, Giant, and Boat ones? I didn't know there were that many to choose from! :lol

Im still debating what wig to get. that one that Chad and Jodo has looks really good, but it looks so much more orange that red so i kind of like the idea of getting a blond wig then sharpie dyeing it orange to get that "Lava orange" look to it. Cause the real wig is really orange...and i mean ORANGE!!. but if i do go with the dyeing thing id have to find one with a skin top.
i think ill just get both, get the Carrot top one so that way i have it, then upgrade from there if money and time proides
