TOS HA HERO / 5th HERO replica thread

To make you acrylic cloudy, just dip it in acetone for a few seconds and repeat to obtain the right "wear and tear";)

I'll try that. I'm trying to finish by Tuesday. But I might have time to revisit the acrylic.

So, some of you probably already knew the battery/handle is not removeable on the DS/AA and were wondering how I was going to handle that. Well, I just took a jewelers saw, and sawed it off. I put a cap on with prongs through it to give it that general appearance. Home depot didn't have the right plug or receptacle, but that really comes as little surprise. I didn't have time to wait for delivery, so I just bought something and RIPPED the prongs out of it.

I wiped it with a paper towels with acetone on it and scratched it a few times with an X-acto knife.

It should also be noted that the seam of the shell is down the middle of the DS/AA phaser, and off to the side of the HA Hero phaser. I will attempt to give the appearance of an offset seam in my replica.

You don`t have to wipe it with anything; just dipping it in acetone, leave to dry will do just fine over time. You may want to dip it many times to achieve the effect

Now you’re speaking my language.

It was harder than it sounds! I hit the plug with a 10lb sledge repeatedly with a 1/4 steel plate under it, and it just BOUNCED off. I finally had to get my hacksaw out, and cut the plastic deep enough to grab the prongs with some lineman's pliers and wriggle it back and forth until it came loose. It probably looked comical to anyone watching.

But! I triumphed over the inanimate object, so that is what really counts!
:p

My paint was too dark. I mixed up batch #2. It was still too dark. I mixed up batch#3.
I'm doing a test paint, right now.

Due to life getting in the way, my replica will not be finished before the auction. :(
It's a bit more challenging than I thought. Short on time, and some parts will also not arrive on time.

Just pick it up when you can. If nothing else, it is an excellent waste of time and money!

(And you get a phaser at the end!)

Thanks. Yes, I didn't realize until late that more parts were necessary.
The TALLER clear acrylic riser, and the metal plate under the aluminum grill.
Both available on eBay. But making them would be cheaper. I was just trying to save time by buying everything pre-made.

I need some advise.
1. My prongs of my improvised plug need trimmed. Check. I'll do that.
2.But, What the heck is going on with color of the battery/handle ?
I used a semi-dark gray at best, and the HA Hero almost looks lighter...surely it's just a reflection...especially as I thought these were referred to as the "black handled" phasers.

Advise requested.

It's been referred to as many colors, and those who've seen it have a hard time describing it, variously: gunmetal, boltgun, metallic gray, and then you get into the whole antique bronze debate. It's not just a "black"

Like the phaser body paint, I'm going to have to reformulate the handle color as well. No surprise. If it was easy, people would sell the paint color on eBay. :p

These are my preferred phaser colors:

P1: Duplicolor Dark Charcoal.

P2: Krylon Shadow Gray.

P2 handle: Duplicolor Storm Gray Metallic.

Not quite a dead-on match for the Wand phaser (the Shadow Gray skews more toward blue, which I actually prefer), but they’re pretty close.

I might've done that if I'd seen that to start with, but now that I already bought paint, and am experimenting with it, I'm actually having fun doing it from scratch. Like scratch cooking, instead of TV dinners!

Trying to color match from a pic is useless unless you have a Grey Scale place right beside the handle. Saying that, you'll have to experiment with the colors Gregatron gave you.
Good luck ;)
