Tron legacy Disk - My quick attempt

More progress, damn day job, it gets in the way of the fun stuff all the time. Interesting ideas you guys (and gals) post. I'm making the disk a 2-piece vacuform so I can light it, but I could use that as a mold to make a lightweight poly-foam version, that may just fly.

I carved the base out of hard-foam, I love how fast you can prototype in it.

I love having a 2-stage vacuformer, it lets me pull really tight pulls, that cleans up the pebble-like texture that the hard foam leaves in a sislcone mold. Now for the details. I pulled another vacuform over the first and now I can cut out the side shapes and they will fit perfectly to the base form of the disk. (an old trick I learned on star trek)

Now I have some details! It's almost there. I need to do some more sanding, then I'll make a silicone so I can pour the urethane master for vacu-forming. I think I'm going to make the inner ring details as urethane parts to be glued on after vacu-forming.

A 2 stage vacu-former is a system that employs a small turbine fan that sucks the plastic down on the piece, then the actual vacuum activates and pulls even harder, making a perfect vacuum (or at least very close). In my experience there are 2 things that make perfect vacu-form pulls, a multi-zone adjustable heater, and a 2 stage vacuum system. everything else is gravy if you have these cool tools.

That is looking GREAT!!!! This thing is really coming together!

Awesome work, buddy!

Just a quick FYI for wondersquid and anyone else that's working on recreating this prop: If you go to the movie's official website (disney.com/tron), the opening "loading" animation is an image of the new Identity Disc! By viewing that animation, you may be able to pick-up some additional detail information about the prop. :cool

Well I guess this should be a lesson in getting the right reference before I start. After Jack T Chance showed me the Legacy site, I had a friend hack the site and give me some good images for viewing. Of course after seeing this I realized I was missing details, and was way off on other things.:cry
So now for the second draft, which I made so fast I only took these in progress pics. I know, I know, this WAS a quick attempt that turned into something more lengthy. I promise to wrap up the building section soon. The lighting and balancing will take longer to R&D so I can get just the right effect.
My hope is a disk that you can throw like a Frisbee and light up too.:love

This one doesn't look nearly as thick as the first one. Any chance of seeing the reference you got from the site?

I can't wait to see this one completed!

Well, I'm sorry you had to scrap the original, that was never my intent! I just thought "RPFers are so meticulous about getting every detail right, let me provide some extra reference material". I'm glad it turned out to be helpful. :)

But when it comes to hacking their site... I KNOW NOTHING!

Hmmm... is it just me, or does it look like the thing changes form somewhat when stowed on his back? :confused

In fact, the overall effect I'm getting from that first pic is that the suit combined with the disc stored on the back reminds me a LOT of the look of the armor suits in Mass Effect. If the disc goes into a more compact "retracted" mode when stored on the back, it'll just remind me of Mass Effect even MORE. :cool
